Chavez's hostility alarming to South Florida's Venezuelan Jews

President Hugo Chavez's early friendship with a Holocaust denier was the first jolt.

Almost eight years after Chavez's 1998 election, many Venezuelan Jews who left for South Florida fear their homeland has grown hostile to its dwindling Jewish community. Chavez's fierce criticism of Israel, repeated on his recent trips to China and Syria, and anti-Zionist rhetoric on government media are reasons not to move home again, they say.

So is the 2004 state police raid of a Jewish elementary school in Caracas.

Most troubling to many is Chavez's close alliance with Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who has called for Israel's destruction.
