Ftp-Fxp Etiquette ***************** Source: Netknowledgebase Author: GM Table of Contents A Pub is a Pub Reposting Sharing Leechies, Dumps, Buildsites, Privates, Distros First of all, 95% of all the stuff we move and download is stolen property, so you don't OWN it :-) A Pub is a Pub The places we temporary store warez we call pubs, pub is short for public, which means everyone. So a pub can NOT be yours alone or it would be called a 'private' .I know some don't agree and because it took a long time to find and or upload, they 'claim' a pub as THEIR pub. Having said that, there are a few guidelines to make it workable: ***************** Avoid using pubs that clearly are used by other groups/persons, learn to scan for empties (see other sections) (editor's note: in order to avoid used or tagged pubs I use smartftp for browsing thru folders imho it is the best suited for it, while flashfxp is best for fxp-ing ***) ***************** Never tamper with files or dirs that are originally there Work in a subdir, never in the root Reuse your pubs, advantage you know speed and size Don't waste pubs with 1 little rip, but on the other hand don't spent a week upping expecting it to last forever, a pub that is too good dies by the traffic Don't post your pub everywhere, most pubs can't handle the traffic-Make mirrors if you want to post on more boards Be prepared to do missing files when your pub dies Try to put only complete and working stuff up and if it is incomplete make a note in your post and on the ftp saying so, and why Check your uploads, FlashFXP can say the file went there, but its no guarantee Never take credit for work done by others, play it fair, you'll get caught and loose in the end ******************* Reposting Considered 'not done' is 'reposting' which is taking a pub from a warez board and post it on another to play the Hero ******************* Sharing Sharing is what our little world is based upon, if you have something someone requests, don't just ignore it but see if its within your reach to fill the request. I started building pubs because I felt it was 'payback time', not saying that everyone should but only 1-way traffic sux. Leechies ,Dumps, Buildsites, Privates & Distros Leechies: A leechy is an ftp (mostly a pub) that you and maybe your friends know about its a place where you store and download files. So a smart thing to do is, when you find an interesting piece of software on a posted pub FXP to your leechy and download from there, so if the pub goes down you have a backup and can complete. Because traffic is low on such a pub you'll get good speeds. Don't be sad if sysop or someone finds it, it will happen. Dumps: Dumps are (fairly large) pubs that are used (by groups) to store (backup) warez they want to pub later or keep as backup to do missing file requests. If you find one and you will, please follow the following rule, never post the site cause you'll jeopardize the system and if you get caught be sure to get a lot of people all over you. Buildsites: Buildsites are fast fxp friendly temp storage sites, used (by groups) to make pubs from. If you find one which is clearly used (recent dated dirs), please leave the site and forget about it, Leeching there or using it, slows a group down and is sure to get you in trouble, posting it sends you straight to H. These sites are rare and more valuable for the scene than their contents or your temp needs. Privates: An ftp site on a home computer mostly, using ServU, WarFTP or G6 FTP-server progs. Behave yourself there, the sysop actually donates part of his p.c. and his bandwidth for your pleasure. Don't hammer it or login many times, you are not the only one. If its free, be generous, if its ratio just leave. Do not throw around passwords and logins, its the sysops decision who gets access. Distro's: These are large fast privates mostly remotely controlled, cause they are on schools, universities or office computers. Without those our scene wouldn't exist.
