Characteristics: Has thin, dark green leaves that are handsome when clipped into a knot or edging. If you don't clip the plant, the foliage can reach up to 2 feet high and produce handsome, long-blooming blue, white, or pink flowers that stretch up even higher.

Growing Information: Plant in well-drained soil in sun or light shade. Space 12 inches apart. Cut plants back and fertilize with a balanced organic fertilizer in spring to encourage fresh new growth.

Cultivars: 'Aristata' is a dwarf hyssop that needs tighter spacing to grow into a mass or edging.

Propagation: Start hyssop from seed in fall or spring or from cuttings and divisions. You can also transplant self-sown seedlings.

Possible Problems: Grow in well-drained soil to prevent disease problems.

Harvesting and Using: Hyssop is a fragrant ornamental, good for clipping into a knot or edging or leaving unclipped for cut flowers.
