The following is excerpted from the Tascam User Guide, Spring/Summer 1992 Issue #8 SCMS and the TASCAM DA-30 SCMS, or Serial Copy Management System, was implemented by DAT manufacturers as a way to solve Copyright infringement worries of record producers for consumer DAT machines. Since, in the beginning, DAT was introduced as a consumer format all DATs incorporated SCMS. As time went on because of the copyright wars and threat of lawsuits, DAT ultimately failed as a consumer format. In the professional field, however, DAT has flourished and numerous changes dictated by audio professionals have been made. One of these changes is the ability to defeat SCMS. On the popular TASCAM DA-30 it is now possible to defeat SCMS as well. In order to defeat SCMS on the DA-30 simply follow these intructions. WARNING: Before proceeding: ¥ Unplug the DA-30 from any AC outlet to eliminate any chance of shock. ¥ This procedure should be performed only by technically qualified persons. 1. Remove the top cover from the unit. 2. With the cover removed, looking at the unit from the front, locate the Digital Printed Circuit Board (PCB). This will be the large green board to the right of the transport. 3. Again looking at the unit from the front, at the left front edge of the Digital PCB, locate a wire jumper labeled W-402. 4. With a pair of small diagonal cutters, cut W-402. Alternatively this jumper can be desoldered and removed, this would allow you to install an ON/OFF switch if desired. 5. Replace the cover, you're done.
