During the Vietnam days we learned the importance of these kinds of struggle in the realm of public opinion, and the "Vietnam Syndrome" still haunts and hampers the politicians and war-mongers. The verdict on the Gulf war will just as surely lay the basis for future wars or opposition to those wars. Meanwhile, the trials and imprisonment of the GI resisters continues. These GI resisters are the moral high ground of the Gulf war, the standard by which everything else can be measured. They put into practice moral and political beliefs which contrast sharply with the horror of what the Allies did to the people of Iraq. When the question comes up in the future about how to resist wrongful war, the resisters' example will be in many people's minds. The dignity and heroism of their refusal represents one road into the future. The New World Order and its crimes against humanity is the other. Upholding the GI resisters is part of fighting for a correct verdict and summation of the war. Since many of them have gotten lengthy prison sentences and others now face the possibility of the death penalty, they definitely need our support. With all of this in mind, VVAW AI is working on a project and we need your help. We are developing a display of miniposters of each resister called the "Real Heroes" series. Each miniposter will consist of photo of the resister, printed in duotone, and a quote. This display will be suitable for bookstore windows, coffeehouse walls, or as a traveling wall of heroes for use at street fairs, etc. The first installation of the "Real Heroes" project will appear as the windows display in the Red and Black Books store in Seattle in early August. We made some picket signs for a recent demonstration that had photos and quotes on them and the signs were very well received. There is something about the photos that really puts a human, personal face on the resisters stories and actions. It seemed natural to publish this material so that others around the world can also use it to keep the resisters in the public eye, and as part of the fight for the guilty verdict on the war. The ways in which we need your help are: 1) If you know of any military resisters, please let us know about them. We are finding that there are many resisters who are getting local press at best. If somebody from their area doesn't plug those resisters into the national movement, they get lost. It is far better to let us know about somebody we already have heard about than to let military resisters slip through the cracks. Also, please send us statements and photos of them if possible. 2) If you know of any places that could host the display, send us the info. 3) Host the display for your area. We do not yet have a cost for the series, but if you are interested, send e-mail to vvawai on PeaceNet. 4) We will also be making the series source (Pagemaker on Macintosh) available when finished. Again send e-mail if interested. More info will follow in the near future. 5) Finally but just as important, we need your financial help to complete this project. We are currently going ahead and incurring debt to get this project out and your contributions will go a long ways in helping to keep these military resister from being forgotten. Please give this project some serious thought and find the ways to help make it a success.
