English: Book Report: Two Kinds March 21, 1999 "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan "Two Kinds" by Amy Tan explains the conflict between a mother and her daughter. This conflict occurs when Amy's mother forces her to be a child prodigy. She pushes Amy to take tests like memorizing Bible passages and answering absurd questions. This does not please Amy. First of all, Amy was encouraged to be a Chinese Shirley Temple. Amy even had to get a hair cut! Other tests also took place. Finally, she was made to play the piano. How could she play when her teacher, Mr.Chong, was deaf! Amy barely tried because Mr.Chong, who she called Old Chong, could not hear her mistakes? Soon, Amy performed at her recital and did not do well at all. When she got home, she expected her mother to punish her severely. Amy's mother showed her emotion through silence. Amy then began to yell, " You want me to be someone that I'm not!...I'll never be the kind of daughter you want me to be!"(p.102). After this, Amy was no longer pushed by her mother. When Amy's thirtieth birthday came along, Amy's mother presented a peace offering by giving her the piano. When Amy's mother died, Amy had the piano restored and she began to play the piece of music which had started their feud.
