Martas fathers name is don, marta also has a brother named ricardo and her mother. Don was a strong supporter and friend of the general because he thought he was going to be different from the other politicians. He would even come to the convent to speak of the general. Now don knows he was wrong and wants to rectify his error. He meets with his friends daily in a secret place to print their paper on a small private press. Dons newspaper was forced to close by the government because he wrote editorials against them. Don refuses to stop writing his paper so it circulates underground. Fearing that the government would try to do something to them, they plan to escape from the city and possibly the country. On the night that they plan to get away they are arrested by two soldiers. They are taken to an army base in the Andes mountains where they make their home out of an old pueblo. Their was a guard stationed by the door of the house around the clock. All their mail going or coming was to be censored at the base. They are not treated well and are almost always sick and starving. They are allowed to come to the army base for a daily meal or they can get their food from a near by market for an hour on Saturday mornings. They could also go to mass on Sundays, escorted by a soldier. When marta and ricardo went to the market they where escorted by a soldier named polo. When they got to the market people would talk and whisper behind their backs. One day ricardo brings a ,live chicken back from the market he names it Perico. Ricardo trys to hide the chicken from his mom but she does care if he has a pet chicken. One morning ricardo looked out the window their was no guard and their was no jeeps or trucks parked in front of the building. so they make their escape, the base was total empty. They got away easily but martas father get sicker every day because of the climate. Then he goes into a coma and does not get a doctor in time and ends up dying. They get their freedom in the back because of martas father giving up his life for them because of his editorials. In conclusion I thought this book was very well written. It shows how much we have and how lucky we are to freedom and rights. I would recommend this book to anyone who just wants to read a good book.DSET|(HHJ# 86*#DSET|(H&nK 6*
