Jars Allright With No Tape?

hey everyone i have a rather silly but simple question..

in the beginning, i used tape over the jar holes.. before innoculation and after. during colonization id take them off towards the end. NEVER one contam during colonization.. ever...

then i moved... to a really crappy apartment..
i also stopped using tape.. im not sure why, i think maybe i had read somewhere that i didnt have to. anyways, i stopped using it.
and i would have the occasional contam.

however, the apartment that im growing in now has lots of mold problems, and some other things.. that i think would probably cause more contams than normal. however, maybe its becuase i dont use tape anymore?

oh i just remembered another reason i quit using tape--i went to innoculate one day and SLUUURRRRRRP!!!! the jar sucked out half the CCs in the syringe. lol.. i was horrified. looking back, its quite funny.. but yeah, thats anothe reason why i stopped using tape--i didnt like it when it made a vacuum.

anyways, (sorry im way too high to be posting lol)
i was wondering..

do you guys think the increase in contams could be the apartment or the lack of tape? perhaps both?

just curious. i never really suspected that it might be beucase i stoppeed using tape.

Probably just the new apartment
tape is a bitch

I dont use tape either Jade. I use two layers of foil, one on top of the lid, so water doesnt get into them, and one underneath, so i dont have to worry about innoculating in the box. I just remove the first layer of foil, the lid, and innoculate thru the foil, then replace the lid. I have serious mold issues here, im in a damp valley. The tape was a drag, and a hassle. The new apt and lack of tape is probably why your getting contams. The foil lets me be lazy, lol.

I have had a vaccum experience too! Pissed me off!!
I have been doing WBS off and on with no tape or filters and no foil over the top just left em on the counter. The Myc loves it! It grows fast w/ good rhizo. I d go back to square one and tape if I started experiencing contams . Get back to the basics and pin point the contam entry point.

yeah, um.. i just pc with two layers of foil on.. and i push the foil into every groove and ridge on the jar, and the same with the second layer..--water doesnt get in. and then i just innoculate in my kitchen, about 10 mintues after a lysol bath. i wipe the needle with alcohol right before each jar.. and then i just put the foil back on, lysol out a cooler, stick em in thre with a heating pad...
lol.. yes i love my lysol..

i really think its the apartment.

i guess i was able to get away with no tape at the old place. but not here. i think i'll try what one does, since i already do two foil covers.. i'll just put one .. hmm, where do you put it again? in between the ring & the cover?
that sounds better than going back to tape

I put the second layer on the actual jar, so when i remove the ring and lid, the foil is there to innoculate thru. Then I put the lid and ring back on over the foil. I havent had any contam issues at all. Its mossy here too, lol. Should see the outside of my house. Mold city. biggrin.gif

I put 2 (two) 1/4......... to 3/8ths holes in each lid. About 1.5 inches apart.

Then, use filter material unberneath the lid.

That way, after PC'ing. When you want to innoc, just innoc through one hole & put tape over it, when you withdraw the syringe. That closes that hole & where your syringe peirced tyhe fliter fabric - beneath the lid.

Pre/PC, I add a double layer of coffee filters over the lid & jar top, held down with a thick rubber band. Then, PC the jars with those exterior coffee filters -- in place.

When you remove hot jars from the PC, the coffee filters on the outside, DRY in seconds.

They serve as a dust cover over the lid, on the outside. Yet, allow enough gas exchange.

I have very few contam's in jars - prepped this way, less than 1%.

well thanks for the tips guy, i think i'll try ones idea with my next batch, & if that doesnt do it, i'll order some polyfills.

i innoculated a batch last night, with just foil.. im curious to see how it does.

I put foil over the naked jar, then put the lid/ring on, then foil the top again. Inoc thru holes in the lid breaking the bottom layer of foil, and then put the outer foil back on. Thats for PF style cakes, anything else gets filter paper of some kind. smile.gif
