Sea of Shrooms (SOS) Tek  -

By Fritz (G0marrah) on Wednesday, November 07, 2001 - 12:30 am: Edit

I was reading about the sea of shrooms and have a few simple questions.

1.) Its says 5 oz solos cups, I already have a large amount of 9 oz solo cups, do i have to get 5 oz or does it matter a lot? If not what changes need be made?

2.) Just how big is the bottom layer of verm, it just saysa a layer, how big?

3.) any suggestions?

Thanxz

Not important on the cup size. The bottom layer I would make a half inch.

I would really incorperate this into trays, you get more square footage of cased mycelium with less depth. The flaw in the "SOS" tek to me is too much depth. You only want a 1/2 layer of damp verm, then 1 inch of substrate, then another 1/2 to 3/4 inch top casing.

With the above a good rule of thumb is to have no more than 2 inches of total sandwiched mass.

I guess the "SOS" tek is to maximize small areas since sometimes large casing beds can have stale spots. If you work your casing right (deep scratch) and keep it aerated you will have massive flushes from trays.

Yeah I agree, thinner casing teks with higher surface areas seems to crop out the substrate a little faster. Look at Flat Cake Tek, Pie Pan Tek, OT's Wafer Tek...

As stated I am using the SOS tek as my first time attempt.I have been picking many aborts varying in size. The biggest one I think was about 2 inchs so far,but the caps are really small. Here is my success rate low down:

of the 36 casing/cakes I made:
22 are still functioning.for the most part they seem healthy aside from the very small output
6 were stricken by red, green,or yellow contamination of some sort.I promptly removed them
1 more this morning fell to some sort of bluish contam
the other seven are simply sitting doing nothing.I put them in my "go nowhere bin"and give them little attention
I started the project on 10/18 and 10/20
So that is one month today and I have maybe several doses of aborts to consume.I tried about 6
small aborts a couple of days ago and knew that something was goin on.Not much though. They stain very blue when I crush a small abort between my fingers.
What is causing the smallness? There is only one or two that I saw this morning that looks like it MIGHT mature.Could I get some assesment from folks?
Strains:Mexi, treasure coast,Puerto rican, and some mystery strain beleived to be mexi also.No idea which are which any more
Question:How do I water the SOS tek casing/cakes that look dry if they have shrooms on them?Is it possible to water them or do I just have to ride them out?Thank you all.May everyone be blessed with stellar flushes

well, you can take a syringe, fill it with distilled water from a jar full of it, and squirt it on your casing. Do this again and again until the casing is moist again.
I recommend straight pf tek for newbies...it gives you some experience, and also gives assured success, so your disappointments don't critically outweigh your successes.

Hey there,

I am using the SOS tek and have some questions. The casing/cakes have formed mushrooms and the veils broke last night on some.I picked them but they were awfully small. What gives? Also I noticed that they are forming in clusters, several shrooms from one clump.is this normal?I should keep picking the small shrooms and aborts and eat them right. Thanks

The roll of the genetic dice can produce small shrooms. Not to worry, clusters are normal (they are my favs to eat). Yep keep pickin and eating
