Oy! I've been having trouble getting my jars to colonize properly for some time. I had great success my first time with PF's last summer, but can't get them going well again.
The only thing left I can think of is dishwasher residue, as my successful time was with new, unwashed jars. Some of the jars now have a whitish residue on them. If I have covered my jars with bad chemicals, what do you people think would be the best thing to clean them with?
I've re-washed some with mild dishsoap, and used those for 6 new jars. However, the PF spores I inoculated with on the 18th haven't germinated.
I mix up jars a dozen at a time, with 3 cups BRF, 6 cups verm & 700 ml water. Temp is 70F. All else is standard PF tek. My PF spores are from Fanaticus, same as my first batch.
Any ideas? CLR maybe? Please help!

Vinegar, then iso, then dishsoap. There is something wrong with your dishwasher or your water is too hard if you have residue from it after washing in it. Hand wash your jars. I suspect the drying agent (Jet Dry, or whatever) if everything else is optimal.
You may want to raise the temp to a good 85 F to spark germination and have good colonizing rates.

i always run my jars through an extra wash in the dishwasher with no soap, just to be sure

Hmmm... maybe this is why my last several attemps have been a no go. No germination or anything. Worked great the first time, I've been cleaning with bleach water though

Thanks. Ion Ewe, what do you mean by 'iso'? Rinse?
I have a way of raising the temp to 85F, with x-mas lights, but it hasn't been used for a successful batch yet, possibly due to the residue.

would you believe i don't even wash my jars ?
i just wipe them out with a paper towel moistened with rubbing alcohol before filling with substrate.
saves tons of time, works great, no residues.

Thanks Quote. I'll be sure to do that next time. Now my only Q is whether or not rubbing alcohol would remove the current residue or if I should use something else first.
I'd experiment, but I'm down to two spore syringes and really need a crop to replenish the supply with.

Iso as in isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol. The vinegar should remove hard water deposits. The iso should remove residue from detergents. And, finally, "wet" (as in soapy) water should remove any other dirt or crap left over. Rinse between each step. You can also dry after each rinse to see if it did something.
Quo's idea is really OK, though, as long as you don't have any chems or old contams in the jar prior to wiping. The procedure I've given you is to remove built-up crap. This is not how you have to wash your jars all the time...
If all else fails, try acetone on the glass, and throw the lids away. If that doesn't work, you just need new jars.

Thanks a lot Ion! Maybe there's hope! In a couple weeks I'll have some good use.

martaxus, if you have 2 syringes and are worried about stretching it out, it'd really be worthwhile for you to try some liquid mycellial tek, such as i've described before.
it's easy as cake, no pc or glovebox even required in my method, try it, you'll like it.
dozens of syringes from a fraction of a cc of spore water.

I've had success with the Cyrus Barnaby Rice Tek, but not with the honey tek(tried both at same time). The rice tek did produce decently for me once. (used new jars)
Is there a particular foolproof method you'd say is better, that would give a better yield of inoculant?
(I'm also saving an albino PF syringe for when I get things reliable again)

A lil add on to quotes post...
If you had contamed jars, they should prolly take a trip thru a HOT dishwasher rather than just
wiped out with alcohol.
My buddy sprays bleach water ( 10% ) into each of his empty contamed jars and lets them sit overnight before tossing into the dishwasher...
This is all opinion of course~!
