Out of curiosity, does anyone what a black, mold-like surface contam is? I caught a patch of it creeping up the side of a fruit body; I tossed the stem and kept the cap since the black patch was only on the surface of the stem, and hadn't yet reached more than a quarter of the way up the stem. I'm keeping an eye on the cake from which the contam'd fruit body came from.

was the cap open? sounds like spore deposits. are you sure it wasn't really dark purple? it's unusual to get mold growing on a fruit body.

After posting the question, it occured to me that it might indeed be spore deposits I was seeing. A second fruit body I picked today had a small amount of the same blackish/purplish gunk on the stem--but, revealingly, many clumps of it in the gills under the cap.

So--mystery solved. The poor things are just trying to do their jobs. =]
