actually it can work like that if you use a glovebox, flowhood, or the oven...you'll need to be very sterile in your methods. However, since the cake you plan to use is old, it probably won't work. The best thing to do is just make up some jars and innoculate them with spores or liquid culture if you have it or can make it. Throw the old cake out when it's done flushing...you should use new cakes for experiments like this.

Ive got one print that i belive is clean but not toataly sure ive started an agar culture of spawn peices and spores i just started an honey tek . Im trying as many diffrent ways as i can , i want some type of succes in these endevors. Ive made a glove box it works well so far my first attemt at it all failed and im lookinf foward to it happening again. But my intent was to see if i could get the mycaium to colonate and start a new flush cycle with this material . If i can take mycaium from a cake put it into a liquid medium and start over why not just take the existing mass and start there...Iduna know may work may not//////;9

You can bury them, which is what I do: break them up into marble sized chunks, mix in with the old Perlite (which I also dump and replace with the cakes). Mulch pile or compost bin is also excellent, give cakes the same pre-treatment.

Dispersal method: break cakes into very small chunks and spread under leaves, around bushes, scatter. I have also gone for walks in the woods: Find a small depression, scrape away leaves with your foot, drop in cake, crush and smear the cake into the depression with your foot and scrape some leaf mold over it. A gopher hole will take dozens of cakes sometimes if your stuff em down with a stick.

Straw beds: I landscape. Scrape away loam and topsoil from around a decent sized tree or bush, dump the straw beds and arrange in a nice circle then cover the old beds with the removed material followed with a thin layer of bagged wood chips. I also use a composter, but putting this stuff into contact with moist earth and covering gives the fastest breakdown. Very effective. My trees and shrubs _love_ it.

In warm weather you may want to consider using the old cakes mixed with manure (bagged composted cow manure works) in some Outdoor Tek

I would avoid pitching cakes them in the trash. Tis better to break up and flush well than toss in the trash cans, and you don't want contams sitting around.

AFOAF has cakes of PF Hawaiin that have been fruiting since early October. They were getting a little exhausted so he came up with the idea to completely peel the rind off all the cakes. The cakes were then dunked in spring water in the fridge for 24 hours. New growth of mycilium began less than 24 hours after recasing and placing in grow chamber. Grow chamber is automated with an ultrasonic humidifier and a small work light that cycles on for 20 minutes every two hours. He expected to wind up with mass contaminations but was surprised to find that was not the case at all.

Anybody else out there trying this?

I have not tried this, but I am thinking about trying this on two straw trays that I have. I have these two trays that are completely covered with mycelia but will not fruit. I have four others that are two days into fruiting. Does anyone think that scraping the top off will help with the pinning?

you should try deep scratching, which entails taking a fork or icepick, etc. and breaking up the casing then stiring it up a bit, then let it heal.

When I first birthed my cakes they went like crazy. So far into the second flush some of them aren't doing much at all (been about a week after dunking them). I don't double-case them, but humidity is not the problem, neither should be airing, light or temp. Would scratching the cakes be an option? I'm new at this stuff. Are there just some cakes that won't make it to the 2nd or 3rd flush? I dunked for 12-15 hours, if that helps. What can I do to get them going again?
