Was wondering if any of you could show me some examples (with pictures please, I'm not good at putting words into visuals) of different contraptions you've created for drying mushrooms.

By Hootie your Hootie (Trusthefungus) on Sunday, November 04, 2001 - 07:49 pm:

Who posted something about non-toxic desiccants like that was unheard of? Aren't we all following the pf tek woodchuck manual? DAMP RID DAMP RID DAMP RID!!! Damp Rid is the shit. I'm not saying other things arent ok but ,it is as if Damp Rid made a desiccant FOR drying mushrooms. It's not powdery its like white fertilizer balls. Eazy to clean if spilled , RE-usable (heat in oven at 400F to dry out, they convienently 4get to tell you this on the box so you buy more.) and nice big grains so If there is an accident(Shrooms in a jar get mixed with desiccant) you don't have mushrooms with toxic powder on them which is uncleanable. Damp Rid is pure calcium chloride , so it is non-toxic and since its not that powdery, you would have a hard time breathing it anyway. 3 -4 dollars for a 48 oz box. (like oj carton).... I'm not saying theres anything wrong with other desiccants if you have success. I just ask you this. Damp Rid.... Why use anything else? One carton fills this tupp. with 1-2 inchesOne carton fills this tupp. with 1-2 inches

By relic (Relic) on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 - 06:03 am:

imagine a smallish tupperware/storage box, say 12-16" x 16-20" x 6-8" with a tight fitting lid, a 2 or 3 inches of desiccant across the bottom, and some galv. 1/4" mesh w/ bent down edges a couple inches to keep the shrooms off the desiccant.

here's a couple pics of a desiccant box with damp rid in it.

the best way to do it is to place the shrooms on a newspaper, grocery sack, etc, in front of a small fan for 24 hrs. or into a heatless dehydrator then put them into the desiccator box for another 48hrs or more to get bone dry. another tip if you use damp rid or the like is to shake it up occasionally and be sure to put plenty in the box, at least 2 inches.

LOL... I use an identical makeshift bowl out of aluminum foil for my aborts

By XUnkyHerbX (Notapplicable) on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 - 08:20 am:

I use a rectangular tupperware, fill halfway with desiccant then put a napkin/papertowel over it and lay the shrooms on that.. works fine.

By SYDYSTYK (Addict) on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 - 10:20 pm:

heres ny chamber
heres my desiccant from a crafts store
but fan drying works best for me

By Lzmaryann (Lzmaryann) on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 - 10:41 pm:

SYD: Is that desiccant Non-Toxic?

By SYDYSTYK (Addict) on Wednesday, October 31, 2001 - 10:49 pm:

i dont know but i try not to breathe and i dont let the shrooms touch it, are there non toxic desiccants? oh well i fan dry now anyway

By Brad (Raze) on Thursday, November 01, 2001 - 03:39 am:

Only fan dry? dont you toss it in a drying chamber after?

By Nan (Nanook) on Thursday, November 01, 2001 - 07:14 am:

If he does not, he should... But each to his own.

By SYDYSTYK (Addict) on Thursday, November 01, 2001 - 09:18 am:

they fan dry to 100 %, i live in the desert

By Nan (Nanook) on Thursday, November 01, 2001 - 09:56 am:

There is no place on earth that gets an RH of 0%...

Except in a desiccator. Close is satisfactory for many people, but close is not good enough for long term storage.

boomer, i've never been a big fan of slicing fruits before drying. they blue when sliced. what are other's thoughts on this? does it affect the potency?

By Lichen (Lichen) on Thursday, November 01, 2001 - 03:59 pm:

no, slicing the shrooms won't hurt their potency. Sometimes with really big, very wet shrooms, it's a good idea to help them dry faster...

By Brad (Raze) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 01:31 am:

Um... A lot of people dont use Damp rid cuz they cant find it. Like I've been told that all of Canada doesnt sell it. No one in my area knows what the hell it is.
So I'm hoping to find some silica gel, no luck on that yet.

By Lichen (Lichen) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 01:57 am:

look in a hobby shop...they sell it for drying flowers

By Nan (Nanook) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 02:17 am:

Look for desiccating kitty litter in the pet store.

By An guy (Boomer) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 03:21 am:

Petmate Crystal Fresh ultra-absorbent cat litter is what I bought- nothing to dry yet, only used some for my cats.

Silica gel turns out to be dusty as hell when you open the bag- I'm gonna be wearing a mask and have a mister handy when I open this next box- throw it in a colander, rinse the hell out of it, put it in the oven (I already did a little experiment- you can dry it back out) and only then use it.

$6.97 US for 4 pounds at Walmart.

There was another silica gel cat litter also, but it was scented. This stuff isn't. Does have it's own smell though, but that seems to go away after a few days. I'm gonna open, rinse and bake it soon, to get it aired out before I use it.

By XUnkyHerbX (Notapplicable) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 06:16 am:

I got my damp-rid from Home Depot.. $3 for a refill box.. I've used maybe a quarter of a box so-far.. just keep drying it out :) It was over by the paint section.. at least the refil boxes where (MUCH cheaper). At the end of an isle they sell a damp-rid bucket with damp rid, but we don't need the mechanism it comes with.. it cost $6 for half the amount of damp-rid, so i kept looking, and found the refill box.

By Mrt (Mrt) on Monday, November 05, 2001 - 02:46 pm:

In can find silica cat litter at wal-mart or pet stores. Works great and its cheap($7.00 for 4 lbs). Damp rid is a bitch to find up here for some reason

yes. just bake it in the oven at 375 for an hour

By Liberty_Caps (Liberty_Caps) on Sunday, October 07, 2001 - 10:26 pm:

ok I bought some damp-rid a few days ago and it's been working great, but I have a quiestion say I want to save my mushies, and I just put some desiccant into a half pint jar then a screen over that then STORE my mushis thier till I want to eat them??would that be the best way to store them??? ps. I herd freezing them was better, so well, I live in minnesota and its winter time now could I store them in the 1/2 pint jar with desiccant, out side where they would freeze and maby stay better longer???

By Lichen (Lichen) on Sunday, October 07, 2001 - 10:45 pm:

the very best way to store them is cracker-dry in a jar into which some co2 has been introduced. Optionally, just put them in a ziplock inside a jar and they'll last for years. You can also freeze them, and they'll last that much longer. Who knows how long they last? Nobody does.

Unless you plan to keep them for ten years, I wouldn't worry about how they're stored.

By Black Star (Mr_Bug) on Sunday, October 07, 2001 - 11:50 pm:

I use a special kind of cat litter as a desiccant called Crystal Clear Litter Pearls. I have found it at several different pet stores and it works great!

By Lichen (Lichen) on Monday, October 08, 2001 - 12:49 am:

thanks for that; I can't get desiccant here. But I can get cat litter.

By leedo (Leedo) on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 05:55 am:

i've been putting my latest babies in a shoebox w/ some damprid in the container it came in. i'm not sure if the damp rid is actually doing anything. how long would you guys guess til they're crispy? is the shoebox ok? or does it need to be airtight or what? i put them on the fan last time and in 2 days they were like rocks. thanks for the help.

By Patrick (Valence) on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 06:04 am:

Needs to be airtight so the dessicant doesn't absorb the moisture from the air, only the shrooms. check out the archives Drying/Storage

By Brettiejams (Brettiejams) on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 07:37 am:

You should fan-dry(1 day) before you put 'em in an air-tight dessicant chamber for best results, in my experience.

By Herman Manderchuck (Youenjoymyself) on Saturday, December 01, 2001 - 08:23 am:

Squeeze the shrooms after being in the dessicant and they should be rock hard, real crispy,If not, leave em for longer but fan dry a day or 2 like Brettie said,, works great for me.....
Also i wouldnt use a shoe box, that card board witll deteriorate easily from the moisture collecting,,it will also suck in outside air and burn through your damp rid real quick.. Use your Madre's tupperware.. Something airtight.. Yaknowhamean????

By Mr. Tambourine Man (Tambourine_Man) on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 02:05 am:

How long do you guys expose your shrooms to dessicant after fanning so that they are dry enough but aren't ready to disintegrate?

By antisect (Antisect) on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 04:39 am:

I usally leave mine in the dessicant chamber for 5days and i fan the chamber every day. Then store in the freezer. This is not a craved in stone time by anymeans. I remove them when they are fully dried(cracker dry). But i find this usally takes 5days. I use damprid. I fan for 2 days first.

By relic (Relic) on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 08:54 pm:

i fan dry for around 24hrs. then into the box for at least another 48 hrs.(depends on the quantity and condition of the desiccant) could be as much as 5 days in the box if it is really packed. halfway through a really packed drying session i'll shake the desiccant up real good.

By Dr. Cubesis III (Newbieshroomer) on Wednesday, January 09, 2002 - 09:24 pm:

Till the shrooms break in half with a nice little crack. No specific timeline.

My friend usually leaves his shrooms on the dehydrator trays fanning for a few days, before sending them to the dessicant chamber.
