I have grown quite a few jars in the past few months so I wouldn't call myself a newbie anymore. But I just did a bunch of jars... Pressure Cooked them for 30 mintues on the 3rd, and innoculated them on the 4th(today) Well I am keeping them in the boxes that the jars came in, and when I open the box it has a really weird smell amost like what I would assume a contaminated jar would smell like altho thankfully I haven't really had any yet. Wouldn't 24-36 hours be to soon for contams to emmite a smell? I am hoping it is just the smell of the brf, because I know that it really smells when you pressure cook it. Anyone had experiences like this? I find it amazing that the several boxes that I have, that all of them have this odd smell.

If it's contam, and you are starting to smell it 24-36 hours after sterilizing the jars... You will absolutely, positively, know if it is contam in 24-36 hours more

If it's going that fast and you can smell it, it will drive you out of the grow room in another day or day and a half at incubation temps. You will know.

Yah Nan what I think has happened is that after pressure cooking the jars I put them in a rubbermaid container. I have never done this before usually I leave them in their original boxes. They don't smell so bad anymore.. I think with all those jars in an enclosed container the freshly cooked smell got to me. I feel better now = ) Thanks Nan.

What are good cakes supposed to smell like? Dont tell me they smell like mushrooms or something because

a) I dont eat mushrooms normally, they're sick. I only eat the ones that make me trip.
b) I've only eated dried mushrooms. They smelled like dirty socks

I openned a suspicious jar the other day, and almost barfed it smelled so bad. I'm assuming it was contamed, but have no way of really knowing, because for all I know thats how its supposed to smell.

if it smelled that bad, then it was most likely a goner... umm.. i really wouldn't know how else to describe the smell besides that it smells like mushies... i mean... that's what they are.. if they smell like dirty socks, then there is something wrong i would think

the shroomy smell is quite distinct, kinda nutty and moist, but it's not offensive to the nose.
if that jar made you want to barf,
it was no doubt contam'd.
other contams smell sickly sweet, like rotting fruit.
might i suggest you pay a visit to your local grocery mart where you should sniff a few edible shrooms, to familiarize yourself with the right general odors.

"I've only eated dried mushrooms"

Well, I should win the international grammar award there... Dont I feel dumb.

Anyways, if say the next time my mom bought mushrooms, and I smelled the package, would it smell the way these cakes should? Like I said, I normally dont eat them, so I have no idea how they'd smell.

hey, I dunked my cake in water last night and took it out this moring, now my terrarium smells like yeast sorta... more like wine... The best way to describe it is yeast smell.. The cake looks fine, alittle bueing from handling i think. So should I chuck the cake? I dont want to contam my other cakes... or let it grow? thanks guys

By Nan (Nanook) on Thursday, December 06, 2001 - 11:25 pm:

Are you sure it's your cake and not something else in the grow chamber? If they are all grouped together how are you sure? You need to isolate the source of the odor before you start pitching things.

quote "* Smelly grains and cakes, WAY less to smell now.

I have one pint of grain that I birthed into a small flat cake yesterday and it smelled bad, not like th usual mushroom smell with verm/brf I seperated it from the rest of the boys and was wondering if I should through it out or do grains tend to have a sort of funny smell to em? Gonna let it go and see what happens but anybody else encountered this?
