Anyone have any really good pix of Pan Cyans mycelia on dung/straw beds? Should the growth be really light and transparent?
Seems to smell fine...
The Trops mycelia looks almost like cubies on dung/ straw...I hope the print was real!!(it WAS SMALL)
Somebody HAS to have experience!! Thanks, fishy1
--Well, all will be cased tomorrow anyhow

these are both cyans with worm castings. i used to have some pics of cyans on straw/dung, but i lost them. cobweb is very distinctive, you are probably ok.

Good thing I did not bail!! The cyans ran thru the peat casing in 3 days! Man this shit looks great---hope it goes well from here....
Good thing i didnt toss the other jars too- found out that the blue-green tint is normal, and not a contam.
live and learn........fishy1

Yup it is one of the sickest, contam ridden looking mycelium I have seen to date. I had jars that ended up looking like cobweb interbred with trich and ran the jar...
I _knew_ I was sterile, and I fired up the spores in Dextrose and they looked good... Indeed they were sterile, but to look at them... It smells like a fungus too... No the clean sharp shroomy smell of cubies.

EXACTLY, Nanook. The smell of the bed before casing is what REALLY freaked me out!!!!Thought it was a loss. Man, I couldnt have been more wrong.
Still have a few in jars...they are all funky looking--some grey, some white blobs, and some blue-green tinges.....but i guess that is normal.
Good to hear you are givin em a go,Nanook! Best of luck!!!!!!!fishy1

Fishy, did you grow this in standard pf jars like Old Timer did? I never did hear what happened with that project of his. I remember on the frozen Mycotopia board he posted his progress with it, and the last pic we saw was one of his mycelium spawned in oakwood chips

Those might have been Psilocybe Cyanescens, not Panaeolus. The oak chips make me think so.....
These need straw or dung to fruit.
They do VERY well on regular PF cakes- then spawn to casting/straw mix.
I will get you a print if all goes well in the next week........fishy1
I also have Pan Trops.
Gotta start up the Samuiensis and Tampanensis tomorrow. These will use the same basic tek....

you'll give me a print? I'm astonished, because I've never asked for anything like that. I'll gladly pay you, mushmale

Naw, man!!! My prints are always free.. Give me a week, look for pix of a hopefully successful crop, then I will mail ya some.
I have a couple of other goodies for you too. Fresh prints.....no charge.
When ya get a chance, pop me a line at hushmail with yer address- promise i will delete/destroy it....
BTW- you could prolly do PF cakes w/ dung and fruit the Pans off cakes. I feel yer pain about straw beds...I finally nailed it. Took MANY beds to get it right. Try the straw/worm tek. Its GREAT!
Anyhow, have a nice holiday, amigo. fishy1

I ended up using Ralphster's Tek with the Zoo Doo, it's a difficult shroom for me to fruit. It really needs a sweet casing... pH 7.5 - 7.9 ??? A tad sweeter???
Worm Castings seemed too heavy: casing and spawn runs on castings were not impressive to me (what do I know).
However, up to 20% of the jar substrate can be substituted with Worm Castings... I liked the growth, but the substrate has to be feather loose... Coarse verm in the substrate helps.
I ended up just using PF substrate with well stirred Manure Water to soak it down... Never press or tamp the substrate. Put no pressure on the substrate at all, leave it slack loose in the jar.
I am considering adding 1-3 teaspoons of calcium carbonate per pint in future jars, Pan Trops really do seem to like the lime. They like it much sweeter than Cubies, and they seem to "sour the bed" much faster than cubies.
I could not get it to pin up or fruit from casing of pure worm castings. It just seemed lead heavy, and the water delivery is not nice. Trops seem to like a real fluffy, real sweet, casing.
I am having thoughts of 1/2 inch of well crumbled Coco fiber soaked in limed manure water and tossed with oyster shell for a casing...
I'd appreciate any tips or teks on the subject. My failures still exceed successes. But I am guilty of not spending time with them recently... I have my jars in the fridge. Nothing cased. And I am leaving town, so I am not even going to think about it

I used the straw and worm tek. Contams can be a prob on straw, the worm poop might have helped. I can imagine an all-dung bed might suck.....
My jars were not tamped down. I used the COARSE vermic, too. I did a qt if millet, vermic, and rice flour 2 days ago, juiced up with dextrose water.....I will keep ya updated...
LIME LIME LIME!!!! I mixed it in the casing and then dusted the top....and man it looks nice!!
Hope I can get it to fruit OK!!!! Dont scare me!!

OK RALPH, it finally happened!!! GOT TROPS!!!! Hell yea- just got home from a 2 day "trip" in the snow, and when I check up on things...BAM! Tons of cute little TROPS popping up!!!. The Pan Cyans are still running the casing...they look like the pic posted above....with some hyphal knots poppin up on the SIDES of the foil container.
Do the cyans normally cover the casing like this? The TROPS barely came thru...hmmmmm
Well, any help is appreciated...
