Well, ok, maybe not entirely new, but here's the thing:
I aquired a couple of nifty little ceramic casserole dishes yesterday, and they looked just about right for a new experiment.
1) pasteurize some OGBD and some straw cut fine (1/2" lengths)
2) add a tsp of lime to pasteurization vat
3) drain, cool, and mix pfcakes into the mass, using twice as much pfcake material as new substrate (dung and straw)
3) lay the mass into the casserole dish, cover w/saran wrap
The idea here is to be able to cut down on contams. I haven't been able to make a straw bed fruit in months; cobweb and trichoderma are killing me. So if I essentially mix up some cakes, adding a little bit of new substrate to bind them together, I hope my little colony will grow so fast the contams don't have a chance.
There is a drawback to using dung in an enclosed space like a terrerium. Some kind of gas produced by the dung--even after fully colonized--inhibits the growth of the fungus. So I will have to fan the thing vigorously several times a day. Of course, since the dung is mixed with straw, and kept to a minimum amount, and pasteurized and mixed with lime, I hope the results will be better.

Sounds like a plan. Good Luck!

This will work great. I had MAJOR probs over the summer w/ straw. Now, with the poop added (worm and/or horse), things are going nuts. I sterilize the poop dry and the straw is also sterilized in jars with an inch or so of water in the jars. When the wet straw is removed, the dry poop is added to balance the moisture. Then shower in cake powder. Lime seems to always help. I even had success adding a good sprinkling of rice flour in it!!(not recommended).
P/Cooking dung also produces no poopy smell...
And dont forget the wafer TEK. I lay 1/4 to 1/2" wafers on a bed of wet vermic or even poop. Then immediately case....and WOW!!
Good luck LICHEN---fishy1

Oh, and the ceramic dishes....the ones that i found are 1970's and one sez "DIP" and the other "chips"....
Sounds like a recipe for FREAKY FUN!!!
My friend will never eat here again!! Poop in the casseroles, Dirt on the stove.....

Yup this technique works like a charm for me too
Dry sterile poop works great for this.

Maybe for me it helps to regulate/ hold the moisture level...and it adds nitrogen and a host of other goodies, too.
I always keep jars of sterile poop around.
Straw alone is very tricky at first. Not too forgiving.
I will post some pix in a day or 2. The "wafers on poop, cased with peat/poo/vermic w/ a twist of lime" is looking nice.
Lichen,I like the Idea of poop and "chopped" srtaw-Might make a good Pan cyan jar recipe.....

The couple of times I experimented with organic material it succumbed.

Ok, Found the Sraw and the Shit, what now?
Drove out to the boonies a little out of the city, took a back road, and ended up finding a place where cows are fed. Maybe ten feet inside the fence.
I now have access to as much straw and cowshit as I want, if I can get inside the fence, but i'm sure I will find a way. Could always BUY that stuff, but it was much more fun to search for it and will be an interesting TRIP having a friend drive me out there in my " Nija Acid Suit " and watch me try to steal cowshit. LOL! I digress...
At home I have 12 quart jars available. 5 big folgers coffee cans and whatever else I might need to store/sterilize I can get.
What I need to know is
A. How much shit should I get, and how fresh should it be????
B. How much straw? And how fresh should that be?
C. One of the great folks here to point me toward a good, fairly simply
straw and shit subsrate tek. ( it's much more fun to post my ???'s here
than to find this info out myself
As usual, Any help will earn you a free sporeprint if you can * guess the number I am picturing in my head this very second....
Thanks and good luck!

you want old shit, not fresh.
likewise with the straw.
i use it 50/50, but you can experiment until you're satisfied with moisture/texture.
you'll have to root thru the archives for more info,
i'm just as lazy as you.
