By Lao Tzu on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 - 04:01 am:

I am a newbie and have been picking from my first flush of PF calssic and PF Hawaiian cakes for about three days now. From what I had read at many different sites, I should pick when the viel under the cap breaks away from the stem. When I see people post pictures of their shrooms, they look huge compared to mine and they all have the caps opened up like an umbrellas. Should I be letting mine grow until then or should I just keep on picking them like I have?
By the way the biggest one I have picked so far has been about 3 inches or so long. Peace, Lao Tzu

I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. Picking right after the veil breaks (12-24) is considered to be the optimum. The shroom at its maxim of Psilocybin content and all you will be doing is adding is flesh if it is left to grow, thus diluting the Psilocybin. Don't over mist after pinning but make sure your casing is damp so the cake can draw water from it. Remember that an shrooms is better than no shrooms.

By Nanook of the North (Nanook) on Tuesday, August 21, 2001 - 11:14 pm:

People photograph shrooms at full maturity, the shrooms are larger, and the pics look better.

But I harvest mine at exactly the same stage you do... In fact I love them dried with the veils stretched to translucent, but not broken.

By monkeyod (Monkeyod) on Wednesday, August 22, 2001 - 04:41 am:

Guess I need to start drying mine whole. I cut mine up to dry (fan) faster. Then I stick them in the coffee grinder and powder them up then it's into the freezer.

By Lichen (Lichen) on Friday, October 12, 2001 - 12:36 am:

ahhh, just because a shroom's veil has broken and it's sporulating doesn't mean it's time to waste the shroom! Don't be ridiculous! It's simply past the best time to pick. It by NO means indicates there's no juice left in the shroom, man! You'll confuse the newbies!

They are at their peak potency when they are primordia: ie before the shroom begins to mature, which is when the spores begin to drop. As long as they are picked before they start dropping spores (sporulation), they are at peak potency. But "peak potency" means only that. They're still psilocybin shrooms, they still work just fine. It's only those who are very closely scrutinizing the amount they are dosing who need worry about this.

This whole issue stems from a debate between spore dealers, concerning whether cubensis shrooms are in the same class as other species in potency. These people are micro-analysing the weight-potency ratio. They say cubensis are bunk because you 'need' to eat 3 or 4 grams to get off, whereas with some 'more powerful' species you need only a gram.

I have grown cubensis that surprised the fuck out of me with only a gram. And I have let them mature until they are _flat black_ with purple spores, and they are plenty strong. This idea that they become worthless when they mature is pure nonsense.

By jim brown (Shrhobbyist) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 03:57 am:

After the veil breaks and spores begin to fall, the mushrooms is past its prime. As the cap opens and it starts to upturn, does the total amount of psilocybin start to decline (does it actually lose some) or does it merely stop increasing? Remember that is total amount, not percentage or amount by weight. Any thoughts?

By Lichen (Lichen) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 06:01 am:

lots of people say ---and I will get into hot water for this---that shrooms actually lose potency once they begin to sporulate. I have not seen this to be so, not that I'm ready to go to blows over it. I think actually it's a matter of time and maturity; a rotten, dead shroom will not be very good, and they start to die once they mature. They change color, begin to look sickly, and decline. But for certain, none of us here in Lichen's World can notice any appreciable loss of potency when the shrooms have dropped spores. However, there may be a slight drop, measurable in a bio-assay. And anyway, there's no real reason to let them go beyond the beginning or the maturation stages, because they really don't grow very much after that. Pick em young, right after the veil breaks and before they begin to sporulate, to be safe and avoid controversy.

By jim brown (Shrhobbyist) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 06:11 am:

I try to get them when the veil breaks but, as we all know, various reasons sometimes prevent us from getting there in time. I have never found the potency to be that reduced, if at all, when the cap is fully opened. I have read so much about them being not even worth your while but I have never found this to be true.

By Lichen (Lichen) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 06:15 am:

yeah, it's a bunch of bullshit IMHO

By Fanaticus (Fanaticus) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 05:35 pm:

Hey Lichen - is this bullshit???

All of this is from the shroomery about the
"potent" equadors. Notice this dissapointment.
Thereis only one reason for this, and the reason
is over mature shrooms.

Don't let this happen to your effort. Pick em young and presporulation for good cubies.

i just got back from a camping trip and my friend
and i ate some ecuadors from ryches spores. They were
the worst shrooms i had ever had, so weak.
they had a little body high for about a half an hour, we
all had between 2 to 3.5 grams, ten of us ate them.
they sucked we were all bummed. never had such a non potent shrooms,
anyone else had that problem? yes they were ecs. big ole
round caps with a little point on top, maybe i will just stick to

: Ghetto ass little shrooms, damn im pissed!!!!

I've been less than impressed with my Ecuadors too.
My spores came from JLF however. The worst of my experiences
with them was about a month ago. I ate just over 10 dry grams
of the Ecs with very little effect. However, a buddy of mine
ate only about 2.6 dry grams a few weeks later
(i ate 6 grams that night) and got off in a BIG way
according to him. The 6 i took had my laughing my ass
off at just about everything, but thats how i get on
really low doses of LSD, so i wasn't impressed that time either.
Dunno what the deal is.

I have had a similar weak experience with my Ecu.
I grew it on rice/verm cakes, cased with soil/verm
and i've gotten some nice large fruits only a few but
upon eating 3 grams dry I felt nothing. I previously
grew about 2 grams dry off of a cake from the same batch
so I will assay those soon. Hope this is not a some wild
genetic failure, even though I don't see how that could happen.
The fruits look nice and healthy and they blue also!!
Time will have to tell.

Okay, so I got anxious. I wanted to "test" out
my first grown babies. It was a work night
and I didn't really want to Trip, I just wanted
to touch the treshhold, you how potent
these lil buggers were...EQ's, by the way...
I ate 5 grams fresh...nothing, uh, ok,
hour later I ate 1 gram dry...still...nothing,
I think I should have touched the threshold with
that dontcha think?

EQs are totally beautiful to look at,
and therefore often fully mature, in my
experience they seem kinda mild,
its sweet tho, nothing wrong with eating
a few more when they are so pretty.
Had the time of my life off a half ounce
of dry closed caps.

I knew I was going to take flak for this. I don't want to argue. I fully respect you and the knowledge and expertise you have accumulated. You are far more experienced in these matters than I.

However, since I put myself on the line already, I will state my case in clear terms.

I have eaten possibly as many shrooms in my lifetime as any other person , unequivocally. (possibly not) I'm not trying to brag, so sorry. Suffice it that I know all about eating shrooms, ok? I have to say some races are less potent than others. I've grown Hawaaians that weighed less that 1g wet, and gotten off on them, while a handful of False Mexicana didn't come close to producing the same high.

My partner and I have eaten them in all stages from aborts to post-spore print caps, and they all work to varying degrees. What I object to is the notion that a shroom should be "thrown away" if it's mature. This is pure bullshit in your albino, amazonian, Hawaaian, B+, and treasure coast. They all can get us off in reasonable doses after the spores begin to drop. In our experience, they just don't lose that much potency.

By Nan (Nanook) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 07:25 pm:

Well Lichen, I guess we both saw this coming. I nearly cringed when I read your post...

Not to argue, but just some additional info.

I have a hard enough time getting off on shrooms as it is. A good dose for me is about 9-14 grams of primo dried pre-sporulated shrooms.

If the shrooms have sporulated, forget it. I catch a buzz from 1/2 ounce dried, but it always leaves me scratching my head wondering why my trip lasted as long as an amusement part ride.

Yes there is still magic in post-sporulating shrooms. Most people who dose in the 1-4 gram range will be very happy eating mature post-sporulating fruits. For people with heads of concrete like I have... Here's the tips:

Grow shrooms on grain... PF TEK, Cased Grain Tek, it makes little difference, but grain substrate grown shrooms make a noticeable difference to me.

Pick second or third flush shrooms pre-veil breaking.

If I do this I can dose with as little as 8-9 grams and really feel it.

A post-sporulated first flush shroom grown on straw or compost... For me personally... Is a waste of time chewing. I can eat them till I am bloated, the experience is just not the same... To me.

It is likely you guys are not able to determine a significant difference because you are more sensitive. Take away that sensitivity, and you would likely notice the difference.

For most of you guys, Lichen & Vitti are correct. For the minority who really have to grow and dose heavy to get off... Listen to PF.

And remember no two people are the same, no two people grow the same, no two trips are the same. Your best bet is to do what works for you.

By Lichen (Lichen) on Monday, November 19, 2001 - 08:19 pm:

ok, Nan. Like I said, I don't see a hell of a lot of difference. But then, I am sensitive to the shroom. Those tiny little Hawaaians an inch long and as big as pencil lead could get me off...we're talking less than 1/4g...but of course, those were exceptional second-flush powerhouse shrooms. Usually 2g is a fine dose for me, unless I've been eating them every day.

Boy, I hate to put my foot in my mouth

you're such a sweetheart, Nanook of The North

By Fanaticus (Fanaticus) on Tuesday, November 20, 2001 - 03:15 am:

Hey Lichen - no dissing intended. It is just that this "potency" question might be the most important question about these that there is.

I hate it when I see people complaining how they didn't get off on the shrooms. And I think there is a good explanation.

I have heard these stories about all the cubies including the PF and B+. None of them are exempt. but all of them can be maxed out by not letting them mature so big.

Of course there will always be disagreements about this, but after all, we are all in search of the magic shrooms, and good looking big fruitings don't spell MAGIC to me.

By jim brown (Shrhobbyist) on Wednesday, November 21, 2001 - 06:42 am:

PF, in your first post, all of your examples have to do with equadors. Perhaps the Eqs are more prone to this lose? Anyways, my issue is not not getting off on shrooms but rather getting off on shrooms regardless of maturity. Recently I accidentally left an entire flush of Hawaiians for a few days. When I came back all the caps were as upturned as they could be. I have been eating these mature shrooms with my regular dosage and been quite pleased with my findings. Could it be that different races lose there magic at different races?

it could be that your hawaiians were quite potent to begin with.
