well, here's what i have so far,
i prepared a syringe from one of the prints i recieved from swilly. inoculated grass seed in qt. w/ polyfil vent. grass seed was roughly 1:2 ratio water:seed p.c.'d 45 min. @ 15 psi. inoculated through polyfil. it's been growing quite well, a little slow b/c it's been at room temps, but not bad at all. i also have 3 plates of MEA streaked with swilly's spores but it's only been a couple days. as for the qt. above, i have a bale of wheat straw, a 40 lb. bag of composted cow manure, and some earthworm castings waiting for it. filter patch bags and an impulse sealer on the way to make it all happen. wish me luck!

I recently saw a tek calling for rye grass seed...is this the kind of seed you used?
|By Fishy1 (Fishy1) on Friday, November 02, 2001 - 02:52 pm:|
The grass seed is also used for Mexicanas and Tampanensis. Cheap and easily availible. Like me!!!
BTW- great job!! I have Trops. on PF cakes at 100%. Just need to get them on some poop. If using the straw alone, watch out for contams. Or mix it with some poop....good luck!!fishy1

oh, yeah! I got it, now. It was the recipe for the philosopher's stones that called for rye grass seed

the bag say's it's mostly rye grass seed. i've found it works pretty good, a little slower than rye berries, but not by much. it pretty much looks the same as the pan cyan mycellia i've done. i'm going to use this jar as spawn and basically follow the pan tek at
www.nansnook.com/archives/tek/pans.htm. i got my impulse sealer today and should have the filter patch bags soon.
while the substrate is being colonized by this spawn i'm going to try my hand at getting an isolated strain of this species from the agar plates. i'm going to make a new fruiting tub for these as well. one note, germination of the spores on the grass seed was extrememly fast, like 2 days, the probably would have run the entire jar in a week after that if i'd had them around 80+F. unfortunately b/c of a recent rearrangement, my temperature controlled closet is now full of kids stuff and i can't yet move the setup to the new closet.
btw, if anyone wants to use some grass seed for spawn or whatever, i found 2:1 seed:water is just slightly too much water. i don't have an exact figure though.it is shakeable until it get fully colonized, then it's a bitch to shake apart, a bit of gypsum might cure that though. i don't know how anything would fruit from it, but it's good spawn. soaking it in water overnight then straining and p.c.'ing make be a better way to use grass seed, i haven't tried that yet.

i have found that if the rye grass seed is soaked overnight in clean water, then rinsed thoroughly to remove the gluten, it works out pretty well. pc'ing cooks the seed and there is no excess moisture. skipping the rinsing makes it stick together, and problems follow.
as many of us as there are, i bet we've tried just about everything! jack

Hopefully someone can answer some really basic questions. Thanks.
Relic all looks good! Congrats on how far you are right now . But i got a question for you and others, how many jars do you set in the pc at a time? can you stack jars? water doesnt get in the pollyfill? Could you place foil over the polyfill if you wanted to be extra safe and would it colo at the same speed? Thanks guys sorry for the questions.

yes, you put foil over the polyfil. often the polyfil still get's a bit wet, i pat it with a paper towel. it's never given me any problems. yes, it will colonized fine with foil over it, i do this. the foil is hardly air tight. as for you're p.c., you can put as many jars as you can reasonably fit inside. yes, you can stack jars as well. one note, blunted syringes can be a bitch to get through the polyfil, i found that if you go 'next' to the polyfil they work ok. another tip is to put your finger on one side of the polyfil to hold it against the lid so that it doesn't get pushed though, this is especially important if using blunted syringes.
