I Cleaned my 8 PF cakes and Dunked them 20 hours. cleaned out my Terranium, Sterilized my Perlite, put it back in the terranium and added H202. sprayed everything down with solution of h202 and put my cakes back in for a second flush. Checked on them today and they are still a little bruised in areas but what concerns me is this Fuzzy White Stuff. It looks like cotton on my cakes. This is my first attempt at growing so I do not know if this is normal or not. I did not have this type of mycelial growth initially during the 1st flush. Is this a contam or something normal?

In the last "fuzz" conversation, people were saying it was good. This is the fuzz that forms around the base of the shrooms, right? What about the thin white fuzz that sometimes gets all over? Can anyone describe the difference between good fuzz and cob-web mold? Thanks.

White Fuzz Is Good!

PURE WHITE FUZZ that grows on cakes, verm layers, casings, the bases of shrooms (even on caps!) is a very good sign. White Fuzz is an indicator of strong metabolic activity. This mycelia needs to breath: Fan Frequently

4-5 Fannings a day is not overboard when you see lots of White Fuzz. (Funny thing: frequent fanning is the #1 preventive of cobweb, go figure)

Cobweb is "smokey" and billows. It has no ordered structure like mycelia fuzz (hence "cobweb") It grays as it ages. And it grows like fire through a lumberyard: many times faster than mycelia. Cobweb leaps and climbs. Ask yourself: Does it grow like fire and billow like gray smoke? That's cobweb.

Cobweb is simply and effectively treated with pure H202 in a spray bottle. H202 dissolves cobweb almost instantly (sure fire test), and if you hit it all and keep things aired, there's a good chance it won't come back.

Cobweb is more troublesome on cased beds than PF cakes.

White Fuzz can occur at any point in the life cycle of a shroom, and generally indicates a need for increased air exchanges (which also happens to be an effective measure to _prevent_ cobweb).

Most PF cake growers will see no cobweb on their cakes if they follow the Teks. Cobweb is rare on cakes. Follow these Teks and 98 times out of 100 you are seeing White Fuzz. Please, Please, Please, Relax. Don't Worry. Be Happy

Hello all,

I birthed 10 PF style cakes and put them into a perlite humidified aquarium. They have been in for about 5 days and about 1/2 of the cakes are growing white fuzz balls. Is this normal? If so, how long 'till fruiting starts.

Also, they aren't PF strain so they didn't really pin before I birthed them.

Any info would be great,

The fuzz is normal, although your humidity might be a bit low in your environment. I think they should always pin before you borth them. PF pins fastest.

Fuzz is normal after Birthing and/or Dunking. I believe the fuzz is responsible for gas exchange: cakes breath, and fuzz indicates you should be fanning 3-4 times a day, misting, and getting ready for some action. Fuzz is a very good thing

I'm glad to hear that fuzz is a good thing.

Some say that fuzz means too much moisture, others say that it means too little

The walls and ceiling of my terrarium have plenty of condensation on them so I am guessing there is plenty of moisture in it.

The lid of my aquarium is constructed of a wooden frame that is about 1/2 inch wider than the top and has clear vinyl tacked onto the wooden frame. It isn't too heavy but it looks almost identical to the aquarium lid on fanaticus' site.

Also, I has only been 6 days since I put them into the aquarium.

Oh well, perhaps I still have newbie anxiety

Too high... Too low... Going up and down... Fuzz means everything is about right. Fan frequently (the cakes are metabolizing rapidly and the fuzz exchanges air to the mycelia), keep misting (you don't want to dry it out). Really, fuzz means the cakes are doing great.

Hey All!!!

Wow! Judging by all of the posts it has been a busy weekend around here, I hope thats a GOOD THING! LOL! If my post has been asked by someone else please just point me in the right direction as I am at work and don't have time to read thru the posts today, and no puter at home... Enough Small talk, as I am perplexed.

I have a 20 gallon aquarium set up FULL of cakes and a 6x8 casing.
Drip shield is in place, a florescent uv light is set up on a digital timer to
come on twice a day for an hour.

Humidity is fed via an inch of soaked perlite with heat coming from a 5x10
strip of heat tape duct taped to the bottom, in the middle.

Cakes are half pints ( went in BEFORE pinning ) that have been colonizing for a month. They were fully colonized after 3 weeks, and left in the jars an additional week.

Cakes are also double cased via Pf tek double casing tek.
They are a brilliant white.

My Problem:

Unfortunately, the cakes are beggining to grow fuzzy mycelium on the sides.
Which is odd, considering I have two cakes from the same batch not only pinning
in single cake terrariums on my fridge, but doing MIGHTY well. These cakes were not cased and have no mycelial " fuzzies " on them...

Pinning looks like it is just around the corner, but I am worried about the fuzzy myceliam growth. It does not appear to be a mold of any kind, growth seems to be uniform throughout all of my baby cakes in the terrarium, so I must have the growing conditions wrong.

And, I have not as of yet purchased a damn temerature strip or hygrometer
for this setup. Stupid, stupid, stupid. I thought that I could recreate the conditions my other two cakes are having cause they are thriving!! The mushies are growing over an inch a day! WAY more than an inch a day.

Anybody has any ideas, please shoot. I have PLENTY of cakes and terrariums all set up behind these, almost ready to go. But I need to figure out what I am doing wrong, so I don't do it again!!

White fuzz is no problem it is just very active mycelium in high humidity. Just increase your fanning. And your cased cakes will take a little longer than the non cased one's.

Dont worry they will be pinning in no time
