i consistantly get contams after i dunk...not in all the cakes, but there is always a few that ! lose to contamination after my first dunk of each batch. any suggestions?

are you refridgerating during dunk?
what are you dunking in?
are you dunking them all separately?

if a cake has any contams at all on it when dunked it will spread over the entire cake and after about a day in the terrarium it will be a hideous contam monster. on avg when i dunk 20 cakes i lose 1, the only time i've lost more was when i got lazy once and dunked 20 cakes in one big pasta pot.....that time i lost 20.

rinse your cakes off with cold water, wash your jars, and use sterile water (distilled, bottled or boiled). if your procedures are clean and you still have problems then your cakes are likely already carrying contams into the dunk, maybe it's time to give the terrarium a thorough cleaning.

if you still experience difficulties, take 2 grams and call me in the morning.

Does everyones cakes turn blueish/green after dunking? I harvested my first flush, and towards the end a few of the cakes had a coupla spots of blue. * I assume from drying out * But after 18hours of dunking I took them out and the cakes are ALL blueish/greenish, they look really pathetic. Is this normal?

yes. Cakes look beat and ugly when they've been dunked.

I must say dunking is greatly overrated. As Fanaticus has said, he does not do this, but simply cleans the cake and re-cases with the double-ended casing tek, and he has fine success. I cannot reccomend dunking, after using this tek for several flushes over five months and six different races. Double-ended casing tek works just fine. Also, with the races that have few to no aborts, I will say it's not even nessesary to do more than pull all fruits--aborted or otherwise--off and wet the casing again between the first and second flushes. Flushing will be the second time if you don't scrape the cake or rinse it or clean the casing off it, or dunk it.

However, your blue/green cakes will grow out nice and Fuzzy White in the Growth Chamber in a few days...don't worry.

[Quoting Nan]

Yes it is Normal for cakes to turn a nasty, sickly shade of blue, blue-gray, even blue-green. Follow the Tek: Clean, Dunk, Re-case. They may look like hell after the process, tough, give em a few days in the Fruiting Chamber with Warmth, Light, Moisture, and Fresh Air, they will puff out in fresh White Fuzz... And you are off on another flush.

Good Luck
