Here's a variation on the flat cake TEK. Lately when my casings have gotten tired out and stopped growing... I've just been scraping down to the old PF cake layer. I mix up a new batch of PF mix a la oven bag in the PC - spread on top - let colonize - and case. I've got one pan that's now a third generation pan. No innoccing, no jars, just straight into the pan - scrape down as far as possible each time - leave some MYC in there - and rehydrate with some sterized water if it looks dry.

YOU sir, are a credit to society. May your children be strong and plentiful :)

so could you elaborate a bit- by "PF mix" do you mean verm & brown rice flour? what is your terranium setup? How do you keep it from getting contaminated?

saney just posted the same thought...it's a race between the contams and the mycelium. Works out ok, eh? How many flushes do you think you'll get before the cakes start rotting?

I have some old cakes I've been trying to revitalize, but it seems nothing I try works. When the cakes get old, they just die, and even new casing will not compel the mycelium to spread again.

maybe I'm just dense, but I don't understand the line "a la oven bag in the PC - spread on top." I'm very interested though, because I have a casing that hasn't fruited since the first flush. Is PC pressure cooker? If so, is there an alternative (I haven't a pressure cooker).

Lichen, he means give it more food then case it..
I meant usuing 80/20 of verm/brf as the actual casing.. is his idea better? :)

Wow - so many questions.

The pan that I use for casing is a seed starter pan that I got from Walmart - 10 x 20" with a clear plastic cover. I put a 3/4" layer of moist sterilized(micro) verm in the bottom, crumble 2 250ml jar cakes over it. I wait 24 hours for the Mycellium to start up then I put my 3/4" casing layer of 2/3 verm to 1/3 peat-mix sterilized(micro) on top. I wait till there is 60% mycellium colonization poking through the casing, then I cold shock it in the frig for 12 hours. Then it goes into the terrarium.

My terrariums are upside down sterilite containers from walmart. I use the lid as the base and the actual container as the lid. I have an ultrasonic humidifier that's on a timer for 10 mins - 4 times a day. I have an aquarium air pump that runs twice a day for 1/2 hrs. Also I have a 24inch Grow and Show flouro that's on for 4hrs a day.

Ok... I'm just talking the regular PF cake mix, But I do mix up enough for a dozen jars at once.

3cups brown rice flour
6cups vermiculite
540cc(ml) of spring water

I put it all in an oven bag, squeeze the air out for expansion room. Then put it in another oven bag that's loosely tied, just to help keep excess water out. Then pressure cook for 30mins.

Now, when that is cooled. I pull out my old pan that's all done growing. I use a sterile butter knife that's bent sideways to scrape the top layer of casing off, and all the abhorts and fungal blobs... right down to a nice clean layer of the old crumbled up cakes that you used intitially. Then I take the pan and wipe it and the lid all down with a couple alcohol soaked cotton balls... and transfer the whole works to my glove box. I mix up some 10% peroxide water in a spray bottle and give the surface of the scraped cake layer a few squirts and let sit for 30 mins.

Now, I add the PF cake mix to the pan. With alcohol washed hands(up to your elbows)...or gloves, just dump the PF mix in flatten it out so you have a 1/2 to 3/4 inch layer, then take a sterile fork and fluff it up a bit. Helps it colonize faster. Then I put the clear cover on and sit it aside to colonize in dark closet. Since you have only a 1/2-3/4 inch of PFmix to colonize and it's in direct contact with the MYC from the old crumbled cakes... colonization is VERY fast, 4-7 days.

After it's colonized - case it, cold shock, and throw it in the terrarium. Same as usual.

I've never had a problem with contams, I think the fast colonization is the big thing. Plus just common sense sterile techniques. As for the old cakes rotting... they seem to come back every time you add the new PFmix to the pan. The one that I have now is a third time pan. Even if I only get one more run out of it before I go back to jars it sure saved me a lot of waiting and hassle in the mean time.

You'll have to adjust all of this for your own conainers- and you might have to use saran wrap or tin foil... what ever, but everyone should be able to do it no problem. Sounds like a lot but it's way easier and faster than dealing with jars every single time.

Anyways - hope that helps.
