Anpois.115 net.news utzoo!decvax!duke!chico!harpo!npois!jak Sat Dec 19 22:04:33 1981 censorship; not just theory - actual case There are a number of BTL management types who read (orat least look over the shoulder of others who read) netnews stuff. There was recently an incident where a new reader on a new site was showing his/her director how neat netnews is -- without really knowing what was available to read, they fell into net.jokes.q ... As a netnews reader for several months and a strong supporter of the concept, I am seriously concerned that a good thing is going to be destroyed by a few unprofessional netnews article authors. As a result of the incident described above, i have been asked how to censor inbound news groups. Even with the political issues aside, as a system manager I don't know if I want to allocate disk space to such trash. In sum, the benefits of netnews clearly indicate that it should be continued but once the sensorship issue gets going, who knows how many news groups will remain. I would much prefer that we (netnews users) conduct ourselves in such a manner that the issue need not be raised in the first place. Perhaps it is already too late for that. I prefer to believe that we can clean up our act and return to the professional conduct which was the standard only a few weeks ago.
