Aucbvax.4927 net.news utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!william Mon Nov 2 23:20:32 1981 Network Growth Since Lauren has mentioned it, I think it ought to be discussed just how this net will grow. Its something that has bothered me repeatedly especially since it will soon permiate the micro world. There are as you might guess, many touchy issues. Security, CONTENT, traffic overload, and maintence. Essentially the same problems all big networks face, but with some important distinctions. 1) (pardon me BTL & friends) Current UUCP is not very robust. 2) There are problems with network "topologies" none to trivial. 3) Since there is no regulation on traffic, certain companies and the govt could have trouble with store & forwarding various material. 4) {(groan)} Our freindly legal system also has certain points to drive home. 5) I haven't even mentioned security. I don't think that the technical matters/political matters are well handled in the forum of the network itself, for reasons simular to why discussing UNIX security isn't too clever. Perhaps we could meet at this upcoming USENIX conference and waste a little time in a group? (sorry non-UNIX people --- its the only large forum appropriate at the time). Part of my earlier humor/sarcasm stems from the undisciplined nature of the net, and of the growing pains that will happen to the net as a result.
