Aucf-cs.233 net.general utzoo!decvax!ucbvax!ihnss!vax135!harpo!chico!duke!ucf-cs!whm Thu Nov 19 04:03:56 1981 New Usenet Site This is to announce the connection of ucf-cs to Usenet. System Name: ucf-cs Organization: The Computer Science Department of the University of Central Florida at Orlando. Contact Person: Bill Mitchell Electronically: duke!ucf-cs!whm Postally: Bill Mitchell Computer Science Department Univ. of Central Florida Orlando, Florida 32816 Phone: 305-275-2341 or 305-275-1249 What we do: The Vax Unix system here is used to support faculty and graduate research in computer science. Also, several classes utilize the Vax. We have 17 faculty members at this time and their interests are representative of the realm of computer science. The department offers BS, MS, and PhD degrees and has about 700 undergraduate, and 100 graduate students, with a handful working on PhDs. Current areas of interest are: AI, Architecture, Database, Complexity, Formal Languages, Graph Theory, Operating Systems, Programming Systems and Languages, and VLSI. If anyone wants further information on the program, get in touch with me and I'll send you some propaganda. Facilities: A Vax-11/780, 2 Meg of memory (2 more on the way), 2 Rp06's (an Rp07 on the way), Tu77 tape drive, a Varian plotter, 40 terminals, (four of which are for student use), and four modems that autobaud 300-1200. (One autodialer on the way.) Connection(s): At the current time we are connected to Duke University and we hand-dial them a couple of times a day at 1200 baud. We also occasionally call the University of Arizona, but that is irregular at best. We subscribe to all available news groups except for fa.arms-d. Of our 75 strong user community, 14 currently get some type of "network news", and we expect this number to increase with additional promotion here. Call/Be called: This would be less than desirable now because of our sporadic pattern of calling Duke. However, if the autodialer becomes a reality, we could probably make arrangements to call other sites if there is interest. Of course, if anybody wants to make informal connections with us, that can be arranged. Black sheep: Until recently we were running VMS and Unix on a half-and-half basis. The administration came to its senses and decided to get rid of VMS. At the current time we are steadily cutting back on the VMS time and it will be extinct on Jan 11, 1982. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
