[ netinfo/nic-pubs.txt ] [ 4/93 ] PUBLICATIONS OF INTEREST TO INTERNET USERS When the DDN Network Information Center (DDN NIC) contract moved from SRI Network Information Systems Center to GSI/Network Solutions, Inc., the responsibility of housing and making available, some files and documents moved too. The purpose of this file is to clarify what each site currently has. Sometimes, both sites have provide an online copy of a file or type of file. DDN NIC FILES AND DOCUMENTS: These documents are available on-line for anonymous FTP from the NIC host. The NIC host is nic.ddn.mil at 192.112.36.5. 1. DDN NEW USER GUIDE A "how-to" guide to the DDN for network users, including use of network tools such as electronic mail and file transfer. Published by the former NIC, December 1985, and revised (DRAFT) September 1991. Online filename -- netinfo/nug.doc. Should be available in hardcopy from Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC) when the final version is approved by Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) in 1992. 2. DDN PROTOCOL IMPLEMENTATIONS AND VENDORS GUIDE A list of vendor-supplied software and hardware DDN protocol implementations, including TCP/IP, X.25, and OSI implementations. Published by the former NIC, August 1990. Online filename -- netinfo/vendors-guide.doc. 3. GOVERNMENT OPEN SYSTEMS INTERCONNECTION PROFILE (GOSIP) The Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) describing the Federal government's policy, including the DoD transition from TCP/IP to ISO international protocols. The package contains the Federal Register announcement of the FIPS, the GOSIP profile itself, the OSD directive to proceed with the policy within DoD, and the GOSIP FIPS draft. Online filenames -- protocols/gosip-fips-draft.txt FIPS PUB GOSIP draft protocols/gosip-fedreg.txt Federal Register Announcement protocols/gosip-v1.docs The most recent version of the GOSIP document protocols/osdir-7-87.txt OSD Directive to adopt OSI protocols 4. RFC INDEX, RFCs Technical notes describing protocol development and related topics of interest to the Internet and DDN research communities. Online filenames are of the form rfc/rfcNNN.txt (where NNN represents the RFC number). The online index is contained in rfc/rfc-index.txt (also available in the netinfo directory as netinfo/rfc-index.txt). Government acquisitions may be made through DTIC/DISA, others may be made through SRI (see below for more information) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DTIC DOCUMENT ORDERS Military personnel or DoD contractors with proper authorization may obtain protocol-related documents such as circulars, directives, or memoranda from the Defense Technical Information Center (DTIC). The following hardcopy documents were formally sold on a cost recovery basis by SRI, but are now available from the Defense Technical Information Center. Ordering information follows the document list. 1. DDN SUBSCRIBER INTERFACE GUIDE Describes alternative hardware connections to the DDN, including guidelines for connecting equipment to the DDN. Published by the Defense Communications Agency (now DISA), July 1983. DTIC Order No.: AD-A132 877 2. DDN SUBSCRIBER SECURITY GUIDE A description of the security architecture designed for the DDN. Published by the Defense Communications Agency (now DISA), November 1983. DTIC Order No.: AD-A152 524 3. DDN X.25 HOST INTERFACE SPECIFICATION Contains the specific options and features of CCITT Recommendation X.25 (1980) and the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 100/Federal Standard 1041, (July 1983). Published by the Defense Communications Agency (now DISA), December 1983. Online filename -- netinfo/x25.doc. DTIC Order No.: AD-A137 427 DTIC ORDER INFORMATION DTIC's address and telephone number are: Defense Technical Information Center Cameron Station Alexandria, VA 22304-6145 202-274-7633 Contractors and researchers without access to DTIC can obtain some of these documents from SRI International. (See instructions below.) --------------------------------------------------------------------------- DOCUMENTS AVAILABLE FROM SRI NETWORK INFORMATION SYSTEMS CENTER: These documents are available both online and in hardcopy from SRI International, Network Information Systems Center. Ordering information follows this list. 1. RFCs, RFC INDEX, RFC SUBSCRIPTION RFCs are technical notes describing protocol development and providing general Internet information. The host ftp.nisc.sri.com is a repository making RFCs available for anonymous file transfer. The address for ftp.nisc.sri.com is 192.33.33.22. You may also request RFCs via electronic mail by sending a message to mail-server@nisc.sri.com with "rfc ####" in the *body* of the message, where #### is the number of the RFC without leading zeroes. RFCs are available online via anonymous ftp or electronic mail free of charge. SRI provides hardcopies on a cost recovery basis. The RFC subscription includes all RFCs issued for one year from the date of an order. SRI Prices: RFC index $15 domestic / $20 foreign RFCs individually $12 domestic / $17 foreign RFC Subscription $295 domestic / $370 foreign NOTE: California residents must add 8.25% sales tax. 2. INTERNET TECHNOLOGY HANDBOOK The Internet Technology Handbook updates and expands the DDN Protocol Handbook. It gathers a core set of RFCs, organizes them by networking topic, and provides an introductory explanation of each topic and each RFC's place within the scope of that topic. A six volume set of more than 5,000 pages, the Handbook also includes a one year Internet Technology Subscription. The Internet Technology Subscription ensures that the Handbook will remain up to date because new RFCs that pertain to the Handbook are sent quarterly, along with information that makes it easy to know where new information fits. SRI Price for the Handbook and a one-year Internet Technology Subscription: $785 domestic / $960 foreign Price for an individual volume: $150 domestic / $180 foreign Price for the Internet Technology Subscription renewal: $295 domestic / $370 foreign NOTE: California residents should add 8.25% sales tax. 3. Internet CD The Internet CD offers comprehensive documentation on the fundamentals of TCP/IP networking. The CD includes all the online Requests For Comments (RFCs), all online Internet Engineering Notes (IENs), For Your Information documents (FYIs, a subset of the RFCs), the GOSIP specification, and other protocol, security, and informational files. We also provide archives of technical mailing lists that discuss protocol implementation issues. IFIND, an easy to use search program, is included on each disk. The search program works on both Unix and DOS systems. It works by searching indexes made from all RFC, IEN, and FYI files, and all TCP-IP and Namedroppers mail messages. As a free bonus, the CD includes public domain source code related to TCP/IP networking for those who do not have direct access to Internet file transfer capabilities. SRI Price: $195 domestic / $200 foreign NOTE: California residents should add 8.25% sales tax. Domestic rates pertain to USA and Canada. Foreign rates are higher due to higher shipping costs.
