higher intellect text file archive ---------------------------------- http://preterhuman.net or on hotline via preterhuman.net higher intellect first started as "elite praetorian" on a macintosh IIsi with a 28.8 dialup modem sometime in the late 90's. it originally hosted some older macintosh software and a small collection of text files. elite praetorian eventually moved to a remote host on a cable connection where it sat as a chat/warez server for a number of members. after that server closed close to 2000, the members found other servers to stay at. higher intellect as it is known today began in the summer 2001 in an apartment in Calgary. we began on an old compaq proliant server with around 20gb of space and just a couple gigabytes of text files we had originally obtained from Fodder's Land and The Great Library. we also gathered a collection of the most rare operating systems and software we could find. our collection now includes platforms such as macintosh, windows, linux, QNX, BeOS, amiga, atari, and many more. we have evolved more into "preterhuman.net" instead of the name higher intellect. our server now hosts over 20 sites and can store more than 200 gigabytes. our text file collection exceeds 7 gigabytes and contains more than 40,000 files. we have also expanded to serve vehicle service manuals, a cellular manual archive, a historical film collection, plus a backup of all news postings and important chats since the server was created in 2001. the preterhuman.net name has spread across the internet. much of the server's popularity caused by a site it hosted by fdirge called Torrent Universe. we've also had many links to our text file directory (specifically the ebooks), many articles written about online libraries and even copyright infringement on the internet, plus a few links from personal sites and online journals. the server has had four different internet providers since 2001. we continue to experience problems with users sending complaints to our ISP, many of them false, and causing us grief. our most recent ISP has respected our rights and actual law regarding material hosted by our server. in the process of growing, we obtain materials from a great many sources. our most recent addition was the collection hosted at textfiles.com. many users also contribute materials on a variety of subjects. i find myself often browsing other sites for unique content to add. we are fully aware of the legality issues involved in running the site, and as such, we have filtered out most copyrighted materials published for mainstream distribution. we are focusing more on pieces written by independent authors as well as many anonymous sources. obviously we have no way of contacting each and every author to discuss distribution but we do respect the wishes of authors wishing to have published materials removed from our archive. with all this in mind, we hope to remain an active source of knowledge for many years to come. in this day and age it is increasingly difficult to maintain a large site with high bandwidth needs. we accept monetary donations as well as computer hardware. at this time, the site remains ad-free. we may implement a banner link while browsing the text archive but our site pages will not display ads or popup windows. as we battle inflating costs of survival, we hope to leave a lasting influence on those who have gained valuable information from the site. 10/28/2003 -- Paul Lezica Network Administrator http://preterhuman.net
