If you don't tunnel through ssh it's horribly insecure, but if you do, it's too slow unless you're on a LAN (even then). An example: from my dorms last year, I ssh -X'd into a CS department machine at 2 am one night (no programs due) to use gvim remotely and found it completely unusable. Every couple of minutes it'd freeze, and I'd have to kill the ssh client process. Keep in mind that I was in the same subdomain as my CS department, and ssh compression tends to hurt high-bandwith connections. That having been said, I'd recommend saving $20/month for 6 months and buying an older P(2 || 3) system for ~$120. It wouldn't run GNOME || KDE well, but put XFCE/ROX on and it'd be fine.
