Star Trek was Apple's internal code name for a side project to make system 7.0 run on intel hardware, with source-compatability (but not binary compatability) for Macintosh applications. It was successful, but Apple decided that the PowerPC was the way to go, rather than jump to x86 which they saw as having no advantages over the 680x0 line. Copland was Apple's idea that the powermac needed a whole new OS for itself, written from scratch, with preemptive multitasking and the works. BeOS came into existence when Jean Gasse left Apple, knowing that poor management would cause Copland to fail, and hoping that Apple would buy Be out when they figured it out. He was right; after a few years of development Apple dicovered that Copland had become so retarded that they couldn't possibly make a shipping product out of it, (Macworld Labs got a copy to test, they couldnt even make it boot) so they scrapped it and went shopping. They took a look at all the other high-end OSes on the market, including Solaris, NT, BeOS, etc... but decided that NeXT's OpenStep was their best choice. Rhapsody *is* openstep, for all intents and purposes, with an offshot of MacOS 8's GUI. Nobody really liked rhapsody all that much, though, so Apple got all its new coders from NeXT to update it with kernel enhancements, the Carbon API (for backwards compatability w/ MacOS), OpenGL support, the new GUI, PowerPC optimization, etc. The result was MacOS X. This has been a brief history lesson from Professor Orb. ______________[ higher intellect ]_______________ From netfreak (Sun Jun 30 11:46:15 2002): i could have sworn i was replying to a news posting... now its like not there or something ______________[ higher intellect ]_______________ From netfreak.hx (Sun Jun 30 10:40:21 2002): it may be a reference to calgary but drugal is apparently an idiot ______________[ higher intellect ]_______________ From Zak (Sun Jun 30 10:35:45 2002): Easy way to stay up for 36+ hours: pop three yellow jackets, wash down with jolt or coffee.
