NATO Adoption of Ada Language for Military Systems Text of Spring 1985 Ada Joint Program Office (AJPO) announcement of NATO's adoption of Ada its common high-order language in military systems. The North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will implement the Ada language in all military systems, practically exclusively, beginning in January 1986. To aid in the implementation of the Ada language, as the standard NATO programming language, the Ada Support and Control Capability organization will be established in Brussels, Belgium. The decision to adopt the Ada language as the standard high-order programming language in NATO military systems is based on the results of a series of studies begun in 1977. A group of specialists from the Supreme Headquarters, Allied Powers in Europe (SHAPE) Technical Center took part in activities with the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD), which eventually led to the development of the Ada language and the determination by the SHAPE group that the NATO requirements for a programming language were the same as those of the DoD. The implementation of the Ada language is intended to increase the productivity of NATO electronic data processing personnel through the introduction of Ada programming support environments (APSE), as well as, to improve the portability of NATO software. The Ada language will be used in support systems of the entire NATO Command and Control System. The systems to be programmed in the Ada language will include: computer-supported command and control systems, communication systems, and air defense systems, among others. ********************** Flyer P055-0585d nato-ada.txt The Ada Information Clearinghouse maintains an electronic copy of this document on the AdaIC's Internet host: sw-eng.falls-church.va.us Ada Information Clearinghouse (AdaIC) P.O.
