GAZA, Dec. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- The Islamic Resistance Movement (Hamas) has decided not to renew a ceasefire with Israel, Palestinian sources said Sunday.
"The decision was made as Israel is escalating its aggression on the Palestinian people," said the sources.
The sources said that political bureau chief of Hamas in Damascus Khaled Meshal coordinated with Islamic Jihad (Holy War) leader Ramadan Shallah and informed the latter that Hamas is serious about the decision.
The sources said there are intensive efforts exerted by Egypt to avoid escalation of violence, which it fears might postpone the Palestinian parliamentary elections due on Jan. 25, 2006.
Violence between Israel and the Palestinians has mounted since last week's suicide bombing attack in the Israeli city of Netanya, which left five Israelis dead and over 50 wounded.
Palestinian groups agreed on a one-year ceasefire with Israel in March. Enditem
