INTRODUCTION

 Happy Valentines Day! Yeah, anyway, here we go with another in my Quick File
 series, a series of h/p/a related files meant to be no longer than 1 page
 long. In today's issue I want to talk about one of my favorite programs, Hack
 & Crack.

HACK & CRACK

 Hack & Crack is a nice little sector editor in the form of an F-Key. It was
 written by The Seeker from the Macintosh Cracking group Fee America. Hack &
 Crack is a very practical and easy to use ware which to my knowledge does not
 glitch the running program. This makes it very useful for cracking and
 modification patches. Here are some of the key features of Hack & Crack:

    * Sector Editing of Data or Resource Forks
    * Searching function for Hexadecimal or ASCII
    * Small (Only 10k)
    * F-KEY!

 Well all these things about Hack & Crack are great, but there is a slight
 problem that need be addressed. The Seeker and the rest of the guys at Free
 America are pretty good programmers and summarily assume a bit too much. In
 the case of Hack & Crack they assumed every user will no how to install and
 use Hack & Crack. An experienced programmer could probably figure it out, but
 to others it may be a bit difficult. That's what this file is for. I feel as
 though everyone should have the benefit of this file, yet I run into quite a
 few people who have had trouble getting it to work. Well all, your troubles
 are over.

INSTALLING HACK & CRACK

 You'll need ResEdit 2.x, and Hack & Crack.

 1. Once you've decompressed Hack & Crack you should have a ResEdit file
    called 'H&C.FKEY'. Make sure you have ResEdit installed on your drive and
    double click on 'H&C.FKEY' to open the resource batch.

 2. Once the resource is open it should contain only one resource called FKEY.
    Double click on FKEY and within it should be the Hack & Crack FKEY at ID
    5. It should be labeled (obviously) "Hack & Crack" and its length should
    be 10972. Highlight the FKEY and Select COPY from the Edit bar. You can
    now close H&C.FKEY.

 3. Open your System File and disregard the warning about opening a running
    system by clicking on Continue. Once open, click on your Systems FKEY
    resource batch. If there is any other FKEY installed at ID 5 highlight
    that resource and select GET INFO. Re-ID the FKEY to an unused number
    between 6 and 9 (Usually the first four are reserved and the fifth will
    be used by Hack & Crack).

 4. Select PASTE from the Edit bar to copy Hack & Crack into your System.
    Close your System and Quit ResEdit.

 Hack & Crack is now installed. To call up Hack & Crack hit either Function
 Key 5 on an extended Mac keyboard or on a standard keyboard hold down Command
 + Shift and hit '5' on the SHIFT SET of number. Hack & Crack WILL NOT come
 up if you hit '5' from the single function numbers on the right side of your
 keyboard.

BUGS

 Well I have found one bug of consequence in Hack & Crack which The Seeker
 might consider fixing (If he hasn't already). On every copy of Hack & Crack
 I've tried when, you enter in something in hex you have to enter it in one
 less than the hex value you're intending, i.e. if you want to enter a JSR $20
 you must enter and LDA $19 and it will appear as a $20. I tried to fix this
 my self but no avail.

 One other shortcoming which is not really a bug is that when you've made your
 edit you'll notice there is no save button. Ooops. Well not a big oops. To
 save an edit you must click the Close Box, and it will ask you if you want to
 save the sector. As you can see this is isn't really a bug, but Seeker if you
 could squeeze some room in there for a save button (or maybe get rid of the
 close button since you're using a Close Box any way) then the program might
 be just a little nicer.

OUTRO

 Well that's it. All and all Hack & Crack is a nice and very useful program.
 Check it out, its been out for about six months so it should be at a pirate
 board near you.
