These demonstrations would happen on Feb. 9th in San Francisco, CA and in Frankfort, Germany. These demonstrations could be jointly sponsored by a variety of anti- war veterans groups. US vets in Germany are uniting vets from a variety of countries and wars as well as active duty GIs and their families under the auspices of an ad hoc "Stop the War Brigade" banner. We are proposing that the unity of these demonstrations be: NO BLOOD FOR OIL BRING THE TROOPS HOME NOW SUPPORT GI RESISTANCE THE ARAB PEOPLE ARE NOT OUR ENEMY The main purpose of these demonstrations would be to put the stamp of anti-war veterans on the current situation. Since the US began bombing Baghdad there has been a concerted effort in the Press to black out anti war activities. The role of anti-war veterans has particularly been covered up. We know that veterans and GI resisters have joined with hundreds of thousands in anti-war demonstrations since the US began sending troops to Saudi Arabia but the media, following the orders of Bush has tried like hell to ignore us. An example of this is that in Seattle, WA on Jan. 19th there was a demonstration of over 10,000 people. Over 30 veterans marched as a contingent and there were a number of GI resisters. But on the newscasts that night the only vets that were shown were 4 pro-war vets dredged up at a local American Legion hall! The government is trying to create the illusion that all veterans and troops are for this war. What is needed are non violent demonstrations led by veterans and resisters that speak the truth. Actions that say straight up that we have not forgotten the lessons of the Vietnam War, and that those of us that vowed "NEVER AGAIN" have not disappeared, but are in the streets. One thing is clear, veterans and GIs have a very important role to play in stopping this war, and most of the vets that we have talked to are down for this kind of action. Vets and GIs in Frankfort are waiting for the word. LetUs get the plans made and go for it. Initially we put forward Feb. 2nd as the tentative date, because of the urgency of the situation, but in talking with people we have found that this could be a problem because of the national mobilizations to San Francisco and DC on Jan. 26th. Responding to feedback, we are changing the date for the demonstrations to Feb. 9th. For input and further information call: VVAW AI Headquarters in Seattle (206) 292-1624.
