In 1919, the highwater mark for the US Dollar, one Swiss Franc was worth 14.8 US Cents......... Relative 'strength' in the US Dollar was maintained through the 20th century in the belief that foreigners could redeem their dollars in gold from the US Treasury at any time. These hopes were dashed in 1972 when Nixon closed the "gold window" thus ending redeemability to all those standing in line. Since that time the Treasury has frustrated all Congressional efforts to physically audit the US gold reserves. My Congressman is silent on this issue, what does yours tell you? Ah yes!
