Apur-ee.192 net.news utzoo!decvax!pur-ee!davy Sat Dec 19 21:00:34 1981 My Two Cent's Worth 1. To those of you who are sending in submissions like the one that follows, PLEASE -- send it to ONE NEWSGROUP ONLY! I am getting really tired of sorting through 300 lines of stuff, some more "interesting" than others, only to find that there's 300 MORE lines of the SAME stuff! 2. Well, here goes.......Personally, I have nothing against jokes which are in bad taste, providing that they are meant to be humorous, and not malicious. Most of the jokes of this sort which I tell are attacking stereotypes of certain groups, and not the group itself. The joke about "Jews don't tip" falls into this category. I would also say that most (although not all) "nigger" jokes, "rabbi" jokes, "polack" jokes, and the like fall into this category. As far as the people who are refusing net.jokes.q are concerned, I will say this. I really think that it is the wrong way to approach this matter, i.e., by shutting off net.jokes.q. For one, as somebody already said, they'll get around it. I must agree with you though, it would be rather hard to justify money expenditures of this sort. The best solution would be to simply leave it alone, it'll die out in a few weeks. To the "net.db" people, I think that is one of the most sickening things I've seen on this net so far. While it's tragic and all that, I really could care less. I assume that was meant as a joke (it had it's own newsgroup, fer pete's sake!), and a mighty sick one at that. Now, before I get attacked, I have nothing against "dead-baby" jokes, but taking a "true-to-life" event and sending it in as humor requires an extremely warped mind. In short, as I'm running out of lighter fluid, let me just say that this network definitely needs to undergo a cleaning, removing "dead" newsgroups, duplicates, etc. I think, personally, that net.jokes.q should be abolished, even though I was "for it" in the beginning. This is not so much because the contents are offensive to me, I can take alot worse than that. I say it more because it is causing many sites on the network to begin alienating themselves from that same network. If this continues, we may need another sort of network map. Instead of one for the sites, we'll need one for each newsgroup! --Dave Curry (decvax!pur-ee!davy) ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
