Auiucdcs.165 net.news utzoo!decvax!pur-ee!uiucdcs!jerry Thu Dec 10 19:07:14 1981 netnews A performance As duke!trt said several weeks ago the latest version of A news is pretty fast. Until then we were running the original release of A news. We are now running the latest release and are very pleased with the performance improvement. On our PDP 11/60 with 218 password file entries it was taking 40-50 cpu seconds to insert an article, now it is taking 6-8 cpu seconds. This is probably comparable to the amount of effect necessary to insert articles in B news though I don't know. The unfortunate aspects of A news still remain. The first night that we were running the lastest release, our system crashed and the .uindex file got trashed. We haven't seen any concurrency problems with updating .uindex or .nindex yet. The other problem is keeping the number of articles laying around under control, we get all of the net articles and fa articles (about 40 a day) and so the news directory has to be cleaned out at least once a week to prevent it from becoming a large file. We will probably go to B news once our Vax gets delivered and B news gets given to us.
