However, I must demur about the need for a net.general. It seems to me that there are interest groups in particular KINDS of products (net.periphs, net.works, etc.) and that the appropriate way to put "official" commercial info is to post to the appropriate interest group. It is essential, of course, that those who place such articles make it explicit that they represent the companies whose products they are describing. Indeed, this gives both vendors and potential customers the APPROPRIATE forum for discussing mutual interests.
