The postal aspect is only important to get the Feds involved. Specifically, most states have laws prohibiting *any* sort of pyramid scheme, regardless of the communication medium involved. There was even an incident in Raleigh a few years ago where the police *raided* a gathering for the "Circle of Gold" scheme. Glenn Turner (of Koscot Interplanetary fame) has been served with several injunctions barring him from operating anything that even looks like a pyramid scheme. (I don't recall the exact definition of "pyramid scheme"; it's something involving the necessity of infinite propogation to prevent losses at the leaf nodes (though obviously a lawyer wouldn't talk that way).) --Steve Bellovin ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
