If not, this at least provides a mailing list. -Cliff >From menlo70!hao!pag Sun Apr 18 18:24:46 1982 To: menlo70!ucbvax!g:cliff Subject: CMS newsgroup Please consider us interested. We also have a 4341 running VM/CMS in addition to our UNIX machines and CRAY-1. --Peter Gross High Altitude Observatory NCAR ucbvax!menlo70!hao!pag >From decvax!ittvax!johnv Mon Apr 19 14:28:28 1982 Date: Sun Apr 18 09:59:33 1982 To: decvax!ucbvax!G:cliff Subject: net.cms (net.vm ?) We're in a similar situation with lots of smallish (to largeish) IBM gear. I for one (being in the IBM camp here, officially at least) would like to see a newsgroup as you propose. Keep us posted, please. Why not just start a mailing list? >From decvax!duke!phs!dennis Mon Apr 19 18:25:48 1982 Date-Sent: Sun Apr 18 10:41:43 1982 To: duke!decvax!ucbvax!G:cliff Subject: net.cms Having had to actually USE cms for a time, I don't want to hear any more about it, ever. However, I'll just unsubscribe. I hope you can make it more liveable than I ever did! >From decvax!watmath!watarts!geo Mon Apr 19 20:24:35 1982 Date: Sun Apr 18 22:51:03 1982 I would be interested in net.cms The department of computing services here runs 3 4341s with VM/sp running CMS. I will send you a little shell procedure. A simple thing, but my own. Some of the user's here, on the arts faculties UNIX, no practically nothing about computers. They may however have used CMS in a by rote fashion. I wrote a programme that warns them when their knowledge of VM is colliding with their knowledge of UNIX. I have them include a directory in their path that contains a link to this programme for every popular CMS command. geo swan integrated studies university of waterloo >From decvax!watmath!jcwinterton Mon Apr 19 21:17:17 1982 Date: Mon Apr 19 13:03:26 1982 To: decvax!ucbvax!G:cliff Subject: net.os.whatever. What a great idea! We run various things here, too. The DCS group has three 4341's running VM with CMS, APL and other stuff. We have a Honeywell DPS/?? running GCOS8, this VAX 11/780 running (you know), and a whole flock of minis and micros running some commercial stuff and some home-grown things. I guess this amounts to a supporting vote.... We at NCAR (National Center for Atmospheric Research) have one too, also running VM/SP with CMS interface. Most people here don't like it much, especially those in the systems group who spend > 50% of their time writing EXECs just to make the user interface bearable. I hear Bell Labs is going to come out with a UNIX for the IBM 4300 series. There is a lot of pressure around here to look into that, because we have 3 11/70's running UNIX right now. We (Shell Development in Houston) have at least one IBM4341-II (Shell Oil has LOTS more) and are getting Amdahl UTS to supplement the minimal offerings of cms. The is a local decision, so general ideas, comments, etc with regard to CMS would benefit our group and others as well. I seem to be the ONLY person around here with the common sense and good taste to realized that IBM produces pretty good software a lot of the time. ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
