There are now three flavors of workstation: the Integrated Workstation (IWS), the Monitor Workstation, and the Applications Workstation. The IWS and MWS are ålectrically identical with the difference being that the processor ió remoted into a box like the mass storage. Only the display and keyboard remain on the desktop. The Application Workstation (AWS) is the "low cost" workstation and physically resembles the IWS. The AWS is based on the 8088 (instead of the 8086), has fewer bells and whistles (no serial/parallel I/O, font fixed in ROM, etc.), and has no Multibus expansion. The advantage of the AWS is that it is about half the cost of the I×S`and suddenly the cost-per-workstatéon falls into the $5,000 range. The AWS can run all of Convergent's software with the exception of the Font Designer.
