In brief, it's a gross winner. [Note that I didn't edit the INFO node yet, waiting to confirm questions with them and test the 132-col model first.] Date: 21 JUN 1980 0756-EDT From: CBF at MIT-MC (Charles Frankston) Subject: Hazeltine 80; might interest some, tell me if anyone gets a demo. To: INFO-TERMS at MIT-MC File: TERMS, Node: H80, Previous: H19, Up: Top, Next: H1500 Hazeltine Executive 80 models 20 and 30 Status: new product Users: ? Price: $1295 (model 20 12" screen 80 columns non-detached keyboard) [They now seem to offer the 20 only with big screen and detached kbd. Dunno about price] $1695 (model 30 15" screen 132/80 columns detached keyboard) Screen: 24x80; 25th status line. 12" diagonal (9"x6") Enhanced video option: (24x80|24x132)+25th status 15" diag (10.5"x8") Green or yellow(?!) phosphor, 60Hz non-interlaced refresh (18MHz) [The phosphor is more yellowish than P39 and friends, but still qualifies as green in my book. The anti-glare could be better.] Chars: 7x8+descenders in a 9x12 block or 5x7 in 132 column mode .082"(2mm) wide x .160(4mm) high on 12" 15": .102"(2.6mm)x.160"(4mm) or .057"(1.4mm)x.186"(4.7mm) in 132 mode [Pretty nice, but you want to set this big terminal way out there and use the detached kbd. I find it comfortable to put my feet up on the desk in front of the terminal and put the kbd on my lap!] Keybrd: detached on model 30, option on model 20; typewriter paired, selectable clicker, decent feel; numeric pad, cursor keys etc. 8 more function keys on model 30 [Also has non-disableable typeamatic on all keys except fcn keys. Detached kbd is now standard on model 20 and 30. The bugs I find with the kbd are: RETURN sticks up, making it hard to hit DEL beyond; ALL CAPS is where CTL should be; only one CTL; CTL/ generates ; CTL/~ generates ^^, CTL/DEL generates ^_, CTL/ generates ; shifted function keys are not downloadable. The features are that it is easy to type on, the random editing keys don't screw you if you hit them in interactive mode, and it has a key that sends 00, for you accountants out there. This particular demo model has the gross misfeature that the TAB key near the ESC generates ^N, as does CTL/I!! The TAB key on the numeric pad does generate ^I, however. Also on this guy, ^T generates ', while SHIFT/ generates ^T. I am assuming that these are not unfixable bugs, since the documentation explicitly states what the keys are supposed to generate, namely the right thing except that the TAB on the numeric pad is supposed to generate ^N.] Speeds: 110,300,600,1200,2400,4800,9600,19,200 optional RS449, optional 20ma [Really keeps up at 19,200, near as I can tell.] Has: Random, Addr, Tabs, CLEOL, CLEOS, InsChar, DelChar, InsLine, DelLine, Standout (inverse, blink, underline, dim) [FRAUD! Does NOT have InsChar or DelChar; these are local editing keys only!! At least on the model I am playing with, there is no documentation on char ins/del, though the blurb claims it as a remote command feature. Also has VT100-style scroll window. Advanced Video Option: smooth scroll, 132 column, double size chars (on this that must look ridiculous, but great for demos).] Lacks: Overstrike [Also ins/del char] Misfeatures: Unknown, no sample available. [As far as I can tell, has none. Runs fine with CRTSTY H1500. Runs fine at 19,200, no padding at all, near as I can tell (am using at 19,200 connected to an 11 talking to 1200 baud line to MC. Occasionally the 11 buffers up 20-20 chars then sends them to the terminal all at once, this has no ill effect. Local testing with the 11 shows no problem with clear-screen followed by typeout, at least.)] Aux Port: optional RS232 printer on mod 20, optional buffered RS232 on mod 30 Selectable Hazeltine standard (like H1500??) or ANSI 3.64 control sequences. [The one I have doesn't have provision for ANSI, the blurb claims that this is standard.] It looked ok, at the NCC, I'd be interested in hearing from anyone who gets one. Tilt display standard on model 30 optional on model 20. The big (15") screen gives good size characters for those tired of squinting; Enhanced video option also offers double height/width chars. Both screens appeared to have good video quality. There also seems to be a "horizontal split screen" feature that apparentely lets you scroll the right and left siedes separately. Its not clear is this stops a clear to end of line or even an insert delte line for that matter. Selectable smooth scroll. No flow control option apparent, except perhaps Xon/Xoff on model 30. [The differences between the 20 and the 30 are: 16 programmable fcn keys instead of 8, with 256 possible chars instead of 128; tilt display, detached kbd (each of which is optionally available on the 20); some more useless forms stuff; two pages of screen memory with commands to display page 1, page 2, scrolling, clear to end of page 2; optional printer interface; second status line.] [The model I have does not document how to do ins/del char, although the blurb sheet claims this is a remote command. You can remotely turn the video on/off, enable/disable keyboard click, and run the self-diagnostic (which takes 5 secs to run, or 30 secs when automatically run on power-up] 21 June 1980 CBF [29 Sept 1981 Ed] ----------------------------------------------------------------- gopher://quux.org/ conversion by John Goerzen of http://communication.ucsd.edu/A-News/ This Usenet Oldnews Archive article may be copied and distributed freely, provided: 1.
