Aucbvax.1677 fa.apollo utzoo!duke!mhtsa!eagle!ucbvax!MERRITT@USC-ISIB Fri Jun 12 19:55:05 1981 The major problem we have encountered at ISI is not the hardware costs, but unwillingness of Xerox to supply us with the facilities to write our own system software. The eventual availability of the Mesa language has been discussed, but we need all the system software in order to configure the system to be useful for our applications. Another consideration is the internet protocols which are (as I am led to believe) currently not supported. The idea of using PDP-10s as 'glorified file servers' has been discussed and seems to be the best way to proceed, since there is currently no part of the product line which will afford us the massive storage and archival system we require.
