Source: Netknowledgebase Author: BiZ-nZ Get them here or scan for your own http://mvlad.newmail.ru/proxies.htm Type: port 8080 3128 80 - These are browser proxies. Don't bother scanning for these. It slows things down too much. Go to a list of proxies and find one faster than 15000. Then, to use a proxy while you are surfing the net: For Netscape go to edit, preferences, advanced, proxies. Switch to manual. Put in the addy into the http, change to the appropriate port and try to connect somewhere. For IE go to Tools, then internet options. Click on the Connections tab and then on the LAN Settings button. Check the box that says "use a proxy server", and then click on advanced. Put in the proxy's address in the http box, and fill in the appropriate port. You see the "exceptions" box at the bottom? This is the perfect place to store your back up proxies, just paste a list of them there.... Now click ok, and you are surfing through a proxy. Now try and connect here. If you see your URL, its a bogus transparent proxy and passes your IP along. Always switch to direct connection for downloading files from html sites, or it goes through the proxy. Why proxy a browser? So when you post around the net leaving a trail of posts it doesn't lead to your home box. Here is a diagram to help describe what is happening when you use a proxy: YOUR Computer-=> internet -=> The proxy server (an intranet) -=> the internet you visit. Proxies on port 1080 - These are socks proxies. Some need authentication, some don't. Sometimes people set up proxy servers, but allow outside access to them - these are your friends - they are kind enough to let you connect through them, even though they probably aren't aware. But beware, your IP is always in the log file, and can be passed along.. To check, have your browser set to use a socks proxy only. Go here once more and see what it brings up - if it shows the proxies IP then you are set. But remember to switch your browser back, don't surf with socks 4 proxy. They always boot you if you move too many bytes through them. (@home anounced measures to scan their own networks for anonymous proxy servers with no login and shut them down for security reasons). Here is what happens when you use a proxy to connect to two FTP sites and transfer files between the two: You | commands | Socks4 proxy server / \ commands commands / \ FTP <=> files <=> FXPable FTP Proxies on port 21 - These are Wingates. They actually pass the files through them. Because of this, they are usually fairly slow. They will move files between virtually any ftp pairing. This means, that you can send files between two WinNT sites that would not FXP to each other without the wingate. They usually don't pass along your IP but they can. The ones that do don't keep log files. They are set up to not only pass your commands along, they are set up to actually filter all the files through them. Wingates are sweet if you can find them. They are best utilized with unix functions, strung in sequence, but FlashFXP works fine with one. To use a wingate in FlashFXP: Anonymous ones use "User no login" and port 21, then connect to remote ftps as usual. (This is such any easy thing to prevent. I can't understand why sysops allow this and then bitch to the proxy page guys for posting it!) YOU | commands | | FTP <=> files and commands <=> Wingate <=> files and commands <=> FTP Proxyhunter can help you determine if your scanned port 21 and port 1080 proxies are valid or not.
